Killer gaming network card

Pottsey please for the love of god take your Physics whining elsewhere. This is an NIC thread. We all know you like to support the underdog but try not to support every underdog in one thread.

Read about this from custom pc mag a while back and I think what they suggested was that it maybe worth it if you're a heavy net user and often need to download stuff while playing fps online...etc then it helps as it prioritises packets.

Sort of like a quad core cpu, it doesn't help if you only play game and run single threaded applications but if you multitask a lot you'll see a big difference.

Nice one targeting me, not only it is you who’s whining not me, but I didn’t even bring Physics into this thread there where already posts about it. I offered more than once to take it to another thread but the others choose not to. Perhaps you should have a go at them.

You haven’t added one useful comment or post that’s on topic. Instead of having a go at me you should take a look at your own posts.

All I did was correct some false information and then when the chatting diverted more to physics I offered to move the talk out of this thread.

So wait, you do actually use the quote button and then delete bits and make it bold?

i need to find your post where you said you copy and paste the text because it's easier.

No I don’t use the quote button. I copy and paste the quoted text into MSword then write my bit to help with spelling as its very poor. After checking it I copy and paste back into the replay box and press ctr b.

Even if I used the quote button I will still have the ctrl c/ctrl v step into MS word. Unless it’s very short then its just replay ctrl b and type.

Think one of these spupid cards will allow me to play C&C3 over LAN plus download from the net at the same time with a Netgear dg384gt router?
As atm if Im eg. using torrents, the game dies with a network error.
I'd never buy one of these cards but just a thought as isn't a network as good as its weekest link, ie. the router?

No, the ISP is the main issue, you cant simply download/upload Torrents (you up and you down at same time) and expect everything else to go smooth.

You need limit your upload not leave on Auto, or your download will be crippled.

Pottsey, I will normally be more than happy to have a civil discussion with anyone about anything in this forum. You, however, seem to make a point of taking a contrary view to just about everyone else, purely to be seen to be doing so, rather than based on the merits of your argument.

I've watched you argue and defend the physx card to the hilt for months, picking your responses and ignoring points that don't suit your views. Even now, when the thing's blatantly dead in the water, you insist on insisting otherwise.

It's incredibly aggravating, and after all this time I've come to the conclusion that you're doing it on purpose, hence the snide posts.

Sorry, but there you have it.

Spot on.

It’s meant to and it’s meant to give C&C or other games priority over downloading.

“picking your responses and ignoring points that don't suit your views”
I don’t do that, sometimes in the bigger threads I miss bits. But I don’t ignore points unless its from someone being silly who refuse’s to listen to facts.

I never do that and I always back up what I say with valid arguments. If that was true I would be going on and on about how good the Killer NIC is but you don’t see me doing that.

Clearly you don’t understand what I am writing, I mean you think I think the PPU is the second coming even though I say it’s not any use for most people and is not a must have item. Half the time when I wasnt even talking about Ageia PPU's people like you would jump on me about going on about the Ageia PPU. Now thats aggravating.

If you didn't use the quote button, it wouldnt say "Originally Posted by Sleepery" below. Your "unique niche attention" has been blown out of the water.

If I used the quote button there would be a little blue white arrow as there isnt I didn’t use the button. I am sure you can figure out how I did it without using the quote button.

Hrrm did I, or did I not use the quote button, this has to be the strangest and last thing I thought I would ever talk about.

I remember back in about 1999-2000, 3COM came out with a "gaming modem." I paid $184 for it. It was probably the same as this. A hardware modem that used it's own CPU instead of the CPU in the computer to do it's work. With that being said I was upgrading from a 56K winmodem which did hog the CPU at times so I noticed a difference, for the 3 weeks I had it before my phoneline got struck by lightning and it died. If i remember correctly my pings were less than 200ms sometimes. I really did pay over the odds for it though.

I think the difference was at the time a software based modem (win modem) really did make a difference to the performance due to the CPU overheads and the hardware used.

Most modems from before about 2000 were hardware, I used to have two Diamond 56k modems, one hardware (external, serial port to the PC), one internal semi winmodem (it did some of the work in hardware some in software) and there was a difference in performance - and internal one wasn't a true "winmodem" unlike a lot of the really cheap ones (that were fully software apart from the physical connection, I believe most motherboards with an AMR slot used purely software modems).

IIRC the hardware one would get sub 100ms pings in counterstrike at times when using our NTL free dialup on the (brand new) NTL phonline

Back on topic, gaming NIC's though are a waste of money given that they are always going to be the fastest part of your internet connection, and that the overheads for any reasonably modern CPU are going to be minimal to say the least.
