Kind of a KVM Switch

Got a CRT Monitor & a LCD HD TV....

Now I want the TV mounted on my wall, so still want to continue using the CRT as my main monitor (LCD TV going to be used in general for TV/360, etc)

So effectively I need some kind of 'switch' that allows me to switch between the two monitors! KVM switches allow you to switch between two PC's with one monitor output, so do such a thing exist? Need two monitor cables coming out, with one going in... if your with me.

All modern graphics cards support dual monitor outputs, with a variety of modes.

A lot of modern tvs support pc input, if yours does its a simple case of getting the right cable.

If not the vast majority of graphics cards also support tv output with s-video i think, so with the right adaptor you can plug it into that, a lot of cards come with an adaptor. Look for a little round port on your graphics card to see if it supports s-video out.

Presumably you can just plug your 360 into the tv aswel and just switch between sources depending on the tv, if it hasn't got enough inputs then you can get switches to switch between inputs.

ah yeah, hadn't really considered that. It's got a 9600pro in it so that should be fine when I can be assed to get behind it to take a look :o ... suppose that will probably be the better idea as I could set profiles up to save me from having to mess around with refresh rates and resolutions....

I take it what I mentioned doesn't exist then? :)

It probably does exist but theres not much point in it existing and i don't really know what it would be called. ;)

For one PC on two monitors I'd recommend using the dual outputs on your graphics (I assume it's possible - HD and things like dual DVI may throw a spanner in).

KVM's can give very good picture quality but if you have very high resolutions you may not get as good a picture as going direct.

Dvi is perfect for hd in theory because its exactly what hdmi is, minus the copy protection (which is only needed for next gen optical stuff).

However after i spent a lot of time finding the only board with dvi that matched the rest of my requirements for my htpc, i found that using a dvi to hdmi converter didn't give as good picture quality on the desktop as using the vga pc input on the tv. The reason is only when the pc input is used on the tv will it let you auto adjust and for text it looks a lot better on the vga auto adjusted than on the dvi/hdmi. Of course the perfect thing would have been a tv with a dvi pc input.

Any implications of using a 6m long DVI cable? Seems they're pretty pricey.... 30 quid sound about right? :s

PC is too far away, and unfourtunatly can't be moved :(

If anyone knows anywhere where I could get a cable above 5m in length? I need just less than 6m... so whatever... then could you email me?

Found...

HIGH END DVI-D DUAL LINK 24+1 DIGITAL CABLE 10m

Presume that'l work? One end of the connector looks perfect for the Samsung... 24 pins, then one long one - but on the 9550 its exactly the same (has the 24 holes, and one long one... but around the long one there's also 4 more ports - I guess DVI-D just doesn't use this?)

Costs about £23 all in, inc delivery... everywhere else seems to be £35...
