This is just a worst case scenario that I thought of, I dont actually beleive this this is just a possibility.

Ok so Microsoft are releasing this kinect thing, which turns the xbox into a wii. Well, what if there will be a large amount of kids party and quiz games coming to the xbox? With the wii, there was initially original games which made good use of the motion sensor (ie Red Steel) but now theres pap quiz games out every week (ie cheggers party quiz, alan hansens sport challenge).

What if the same thing happens to the xbox? A initial burst of original games then a slew of generic quiz based pap.

Thing is, this wont just spell the end to good games on the xbox, this will be the end of original good games on ALL PLATFORMS. Every big budget release nowadays is multiplatform, there are far more xbox's nestling under the nations tv sets than ps3's, so developers will make games primarily for the xbox.

Boring quiz based tat on the xbox = boring quiz based tat on the ps3, pc and handheld platforms.

Thank you for your attention

i think the majority of "true" gamers, WONT be buying the kinect. i personally wont be. i game to relax, not wave my arms and body around like an idiot. i dont see it killing gaming personally... a fair few people will buy it yes, but the novelty will wear thin very quickly. just like the wii did when it was released.

for instance, the missus got a wii for xmas, but hasnt played it since like...well....xmas :p

Think its a bit of an overreaction TBH, have a little list of my thoughts on this,
1) Every 360 would have to have kinect for it to be a huge influence in the market
2) The wii is around 50% market share and the 3rd parties seem to support the HD twins so even those with kinect will more than likely buy core games
3) Some of the best games this gen have ben on the Wii, the shovel ware gets bought, but look at sales of NSMG, Brawl, Super mario galaxy all sold very well.
4) I see it the other way for kinect start off with rubbish family games, then understand tech and release games for the core gamers.
5) There is only about 5 million difference between the 360 and PS3 if a company even has 35 million conosles to sell to (PS3) then its worth doing

Yeah, because kinect isn't a necessity for the xbox, there will still be lots of big budget 'original' games, so no need to worry there.

Hopefully they will introduce some sort of hybrid kinect/controller games that use the kinect for passive controls, speaking or detecting emotion etc... Then it could add to the experience rather than detract.

i might be tempted to get it if i can get to see what it offers i.e. experience kinect myself at some expo/event, however i wont be going for it if it is just multiplayer mini-games galore. i dont want to see fps or racing games, perhaps its better for lifestyle games like the sims or something similar, as then you could talk to the game and do normal actions and make the game more interactive.

Thats one of the most ludicrous theories Ive ever read, I feel stupider for having read it :(.

Sure things will be pretty much the same tbh, lots of rubbish and the occasional must buy, no denying though Kinect will be fun for the children. For the lazy folk such as myself always have the PC to fall back to :D

People were saying this when they started realizing the Wii was selling by the truckload, but that gimmicky flash in the pan bandwagon has long gone by now.

Chronicle of Rodney reminds me of this thread, idiot facing the world.

I agree with the OP, if i remember correctly the Nintendo Wii killed off the 360 and the PS3. As a fairly hardcore gamer i havent had any games to play for the past 2 years as all the developers are solely producing games for the Wii.

:)

At that price, families won't be going to the 360 in a rush. Especially when they can get the Wii with a solid catalouge already for much cheaper than the Arcade-Kinect bundle.

Death of gaming, I think not.

VERY silly prediction.

The Kinect is not a standard piece of the Xbox, it's an optional accessory, introduced way into the life of the console. It will be quite the opposite of the Wii, it will require good games to be made for people to consider even buying the Kinect. With the Wii, it's always had the Motion/Interactive element as part of the package, and the appeal of a much more casual market of players and families, thus the hundreds of terrible Wii games that are bought by parents who know no better.

So you say it happened with wii first, and the sony move is a copy of the wii controller so also likely to have this happen followed finally by it possibly happening to MS. So in the end it's just motion gaming that could cause this or does sony have some shovel ware shield? In the end game designers make these games and not MS so blaming kinect, or wii for these things is about as smart as blaming guns for killing people when it's really the people grabbing and using the guns.

lol no there wasn't, there were crappy party game collections from day 1. Oh and Red Steel is one of the worst games I've ever played.

i hate threads like this they annoy me!! ie <insert word here> will kill/end/destroy/ruin gaming!!!!

I dunno, I'm not into the whole motion control stuff, but I can see it has its place (I'd play heavy rain with move for example) - the good thing is that getting mass market on board hopefully gets loads of money into publishers. Good, sensible publishers realise that variety and innovation is what drives the industry, and will hopefully still invest.

EA are a good example at the moment (as much as I used to hate them) - they are trying to make good games for all markets. Blockbusters like Mass Effect, innovative titles like Mirrors edge, new IP such as dead space and still keeping the likes of their sports games (Madden and Fifa) going too.
