Recipients will include all police officers, ambulance workers, choristers and military personnel working at the Coronation. It will also be given to serving emergency workers, prison staff and members of the armed forces with more than five years of service as well as living recipients of the George Cross or Victoria Cross.

Serving members of the Armed Forces who have completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023 or participate in Armed Forces Coronation events during the course of 2023.

Nice!

So because they choose to join the military they don't deserve recognition? Got ya.

So when others are striking and the military keep the services running, or when they are posted miles from their family and homes, worse when deployed for 6 months at a time every 2 years or so. When they are exposed to life threatening situations etc. It's a choice to join yes, but it's also sacrifice.

Some of the comments here are uninformed and actually very naive.

I'm proud of my service and proud of the tin I wear.

I'm not against medals for specific things. Like if someone did something heroic. Or went above and beyond. But simply for time served?

That goes for anyone too. That's just my views on medals. They should be special. Not given it for time.

And there's that naivety coming through. What about those who deploy? They may not do something 'heroic' but they are operating in hostile environments.

These medals are for recognition for serving the Queen/King as our Commander in Chief.

Do civilians not get awards, cash, gifts for their services? The cost is high for the MOD because they're a huge organisation. NHS etc have received a decent pay rise for 'doing their job' - the military have been on a 1% rise for quite sometime as we are seen as easy targets for budget cuts and we'll 'just get on with it'. We are not expected to hear what, if any, pay rise we will get until September this year - but we have to suck it up.

You do know military personnel are humans too? Families, bills, mouths to feed etc.

But you chose that life. You are free to choose any other career at any time.
I've barely gotten any pay rises. Only way was changing jobs. I'm sure that's the case for a lot of people.

NHS have gotten thier pay rise yes. We don't have enough nhs workers. And if pay doesn't come up staff levels will fall. So pay has to go up.
If military is being scaled back the same pressure isn't there I suppose. If they couldn't recruit enough people for the roles the pay would have to go up.
I'll admit I don't know the situation.

Besides, this medal is a stunt. It's not a genuine "you've done an amazing job". It's a pr thing for the monarchy.

Yes, we can choose, but like some other jobs, it's a bit of a calling! It's not just a job, it's a way of life - you also take the crap along with the amazing opportunities and experiences service life offers. It's not just about the £££'s.

As for the medal, it's tradition and history and has been happening for many years.

What I don't get is why there is a 5 year qualification for serving military?

Is it meant for officers or something?

It's meant for any service person who has competed more than 5 years service. The military is made up of more than just officer's - if anything, officer's are in the minority compared to the soldiers, sailors and aviators.

Medals are overrated :p I managed to go through 12 years service without receiving one, despite being in during the diamond Jubilee and going away for a total of over a year (yes this is small beer compared to some but definitely more than the average for my trade).

They're giving them away for certain deployments to Cyprus now, where you're living and working within a stone's throw of married quarters where kids are running around living normal lives. I'm not bitter.

They aren't 'giving them away'. Those that get the medal are directly supporting Op Shader - others on the base are not. I got a medal for living in a 5* apartment in Southern Italy because i was supporting the Bosnia conflict. Not my proudest medal, but jets were guarded, loaded and flew from the Italian Air base and thus all those supporting were awarded the medal.

Diamond Jubilee, like the Kings Coronation medal, are 5 years service at the time of the event. It sounds like you were unfortunate and missed out, but the lines have to be drawn somewhere.

I guess your 12 months away were in non-operation areas ie Falklands etc? ****, during Op Herrick i was away for 6 months (+ 6 months pre-deployment training) every 2 years for quite a while - that took a toll on the family and I :(. Lads/Lasses who were on tour in Afghan were getting notified that they were going back out again! I never had it that bad.
