Kingston HyperX 8gb kit.

Yes, it's on a par with XMS3 and wil usually run at ~1.5V like the XMS3 (if you're running a Sb setup). Timings and command rates are the same too...

Sounds good to me then. Are you on about yes its a decent set of ram or yes I'll be able to run that at the same time as the xms? You're correct in regards of it being SB, i5 2500k 4.4ghz 1.34v

Both.

Ideally, you would match the XMS3 as it's very common memory - but the SB boards are very slutty and will usually tolerate mixed flavours of memory as longs as timing and voltages are matched correctly.

The only thing that you will need to be wary of is that you need to be running the memory at 1.5V (or as close to this voltage as possible). And if your current XMS3 is running at 1.5V there is no guranatee that the Kingstons will. But they should still run sub 1.58V which is the tolerence. (But you would also have this problem with another set of XMS3 as there would be no guarantee that they would run at 1.5V either.)

Basically, buying either set you run the slight risk of having to up your voltages - that's assuming you're running sub 1.58V now?

Think I'm running 1.6 purely as Its set to auto, I ran them at 1.5v 7-8-7-20 1600mhz before which is the standard for my set of XMS3 and ran into no problems.

I'm guessing 1.5v at the kingstons timings would be fine, maybe drop to 1500mhz or something if it isnt 100% stable?

If these are your present XMS3 then your setting should be:

  • Frequency - 1600MHz
  • Timings - 9 9 9 24
  • Command Rate - 2T
  • Voltage - sub 1.58V (but should run at 1.5V/1.55V)

Go into the BIOS and set the memory inputs manually or enable the XMP and then set the memory voltage to 1.55V. If it proves itself stable over a few days drop it to 1.5V.

So the max tested voltage is 1.5V on your present set?

If that was the case you would have to run the mixed sets with the following slacker timimgs/settings (assuming you bought the Kingstons). You wont notive any discernable speed difference with the slighty looser timings:

  • Frequency - 1600MHz
  • Timings - 9 9 9 24
  • Command Rate - 2T
  • Voltage - sub 1.58V (but should run at 1.5V)

There are no guarantees that the Kinstons will run at 1.5V (they usually do) but they will run at sub 1.58V.

I would normally advise you to get memory that is guaranteed to run at 1.5V or below (to match your present memory's spec) but as you've been running your present set at 1.6V instead of it's recommended 1.5V you may as well get the Kingstons.

I just added 8gb of kingston hyper x grey to my 4gb of xms3 and its running perfectly.

As Plec said make sure you manually set the speed to 1600mhz and lower the voltage from 1.65 to 1.58 then test using memtest. Then if its stable drop it .1 of a volt until you get instability then just add a tad more to get it stable.

My ram is sitting at 1.53v totally stable. Havnt even tried to go lower i just stuck the ram in and set it to 1.53.

Brilliant ram for the money, hope you enjoy it :)

Hi Guys Ive been looking at this ram with some Kingston Blu (16gb see sig) the specs look the same as the blu so what other differences are their likely to be?

Exactly what I'm after! Thanks man!

Great ram for the price, though this stuff will only run at 1600 Mhz 9-9-9-24-1T at the best.

But getting any better specced ram these days is almost impossible, and far to expensive, and performance 2 Gb modules are being phased out in favor of these likely because the cost difference simply isnt worth it anymore.

It finally arrive yesterday, running all 4 sticks made it unstable.

I can however run the 8gb kit at 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 1.45v which is 0.15v less than my 4gb

Having had good advice from Plec a short time ago regarding the Kingstom HyperX grey, I got 16gb of this ram and just set the voltage to 1.5v using the XMP ands all runs great. Well pleased with it:D
