As title, should I set KIS 2011 to scan archives, or will this merely serve to slow everything down?

Is it really essential?

Well, to me a full virus scan is a full virus scan. If you're going to the trouble of checking your computer for viruses, then arbitrarily choosing not to scan archive files doesn't really make sense unless you have a lot of password-protected files that keep holding everything up.

What's the point of scanning archives, Virus's can't execute from within an archive, as long as the scanner scans when the archive is unpacked you're just as safe without the massive overhead of the scanner having to unpack and then scan the files within any time you open a folder with archives.
