I'm looking to replace the 18-55mm Kit lenes on my 350D with something a little better. I'm mainly using it at the 18-24mm range at the moment as at the longer ranges i normally end up using my 50mm F1.8. The two replacements i'm looking at are

Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP Di II XR
or
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 USM L

What are peoples views on the two lenses. Tamron got price and faster lense going for it. Canon build quality excelent colour and i can use if on a full frame camera should i get round to buying the EOS 5 (Film) i want to get.

well from what ive heard the tamron is just as good as the canon. Its main benefit is that its a lot cheaper, so its basically down to how much you want to spend. Personally id go for the tamron.

Of those two id get the Tamron... But tbh i wouldnt get either and instead go for the Canon EF16-35f2.8

Haha you're going to get mixed views on this one!

I haven't used the 17-50, but I did a test between my copy of the 17-35 Tamron and the 17-40 Canon. I deduced that there isn't a lot of difference image quality wise -the Tamron beats the Canon in controlling of CAs but is not quite as good in the corners. It's a very close run thing though.

One noticable thing between them is the build quality - it is much better on the Canon and if that's important to you then you may want to spend the extra cash.

Brought the 17-40L in the end. Like the idea of using it on a film body later, the snob value of having an L lense and build quality. Also i couldn't find any shops with the Tamron in to test.
