Can anyone advise what is the smallest "pipe" you can attach to a kitchen extrractor? I guess logically if the pipe to outside is too small then it wont suck as much air out so does it need to be matched to the extractor fan?

Reason Im asking is the current extractor pipe runs along the top of the units with a piece of wood on top of the extractor and then a horrible old fashioned cornise on top of the units to hide the pipe

THis is how it sort of looks now (the extractor stops at the wood and the pipe runs along the top of the units and out the wall:

This is sort of how I would ike it to look:

Apparently the joists run the opposite way to the way I need them to so I thought about cutting away some of the plaster and putting in a false wall sort of thing to conceal the pipe but the smaller the better obviously. The ceiling hasnt long been plastered so I dont really want to lower that if at all possible.

With the extractor in the second picture, you can have filtered re-circulation rather than extraction. We had exactly that one in our old kitchen. You just need to add in a charcoal filter above the fan & let it vent out of the side cutouts. We went that way because we didn't want the ducting showing and had no way to hide it nicely. It's an option you could consider.

Unless thats an external wall or possibly stud the only option is the above, recirc with filter rather than extraction.

we were unable to vent direct outside from where the oven was due to height limitations.

So we moved the oven to against a stud wall and have piping going from the back of the extractor down inside the wall then under the floor to outside, this then goes to an airbrick. not ideal, it was going to go thru the studwork up into the ceiling and then out but there was to much wood work in the ceiling. Piping we used as that tin foil coated stuff probably about 8"/10"

This won't help....

For extraction, bigger is better!

If you can extract outside with a large bore pipe do it. The difference when you cook is night and day. No more having to clean grease from surfaces and it will keep your kitchen looking newer for longer.
