I had plans drawn up by Howden's a while back but I've gradually gone off them

An old friend of mine is in the process of opening his own kitchen business and on visiting my house he suggested having an island

The room is 3500mm wide , one side will need 600mm for units , the opposite side will have nothing against the wall and needs just enough space for walking ,a few stools and with access to any units on that side of the island

So I have 2900mm to play with, anybody got any suggestions?

I was thinking 1200mm wide island with 1000mm between the wall with units and 700mm for space around the stools, does this sound too cramped?

Not a digital copy no, the current plan is a U shaped with a peninsula but I'm keen on the island as that was my initial idea but the Howden's designer put me off it

I haven't got a possible one either but from side to side it should go like this

Wall--700mm space--1200 island--1000 space--600 units--wall

Generally accepted principles are that you need 1 metre between a door and any other surface. That means you could have a maximum of 900mm island and still have 1000mm on each side according to generally accepted principles.

However, my neighbour actually has the exact same kitchen width as you and has a row of cabinets on one side, 650mm width including the worktop, then 950mm space and then 930mm island and then 970mm space to the wall.

Works very well

That sounds good , I was hoping for a wider island but reading online around a metre is a good distance to allow enough space for working, sitting and movement so it looks like a 900 island it will probably be
