we need to replace the kitchen sink and am getting confused by all sizes and bits and bobs

mpst seem to be 965 x 500 mm or so but ours is 1000 x 510 mm , am I measuring wrong or are there loads of diffenet sizes ?

alos what other bits and bobs am I likely to need ? we do have the plumber coming out to finalise beofre fitting but want to get as much as poosible chosen in advance

965x500mm is a pretty standard size for a stainless steel sink but 1000mm is not that uncommon either.

Is yours a 1 bowl or a 1 1/2 bowl sink? Size makes me think it is probably a 1 1/2 bowl?

Granite composite sinks tend to be larger than their stainless steel counterparts and ceramics will tend to be slightly smaller.

Most decent manufacturers will supply their sinks with all the required bits and bobs. You will need sealing tape for round the edge of the sink and clips to secure it to the underside of the worktops. The sinks should come with any wastes required but you may need some extra plumbing bits for the underneath. Your plumber should be able to sort you with that but places like homebase/b&q will also sell these.

When buying your sink think about what side the drainer is going to be on. Most sinks are reversible so will have a tap hole drilled in both sides with a cover cap allowing you to blank off the one not used. However some of the more expensive sinks will be sold in Righ Hand or Left Hand versions. If you go for a ceramic or granite composite sink these usually have tap holes pre bored on the underside on both sides which are tapped out depending on which way the sink will be orientated so are reversible.

Have a look at Carron Pheonix sinks for decent quality and i think a 50 year guarantee. They do have a number of sinks which will fit your needs.

Another manufacturer you might want to loo at is Franke. Higher quality than the Carrons but you do pay for it. Their sinks tend to be a bit larger so might be worth a look.

I assume you dont want to replace the worktops you currently have? If so you will need to find one which has same dimensions or is slightly bigger. 1030x510 next size up.

Something like

Whatever you do dont let your plumber sort you out with a cheap no name sink. Most of these use steel so thin you can almost see through them!

I know homebase sell both carron and franke sinks if you want to see the finish/quality before you buy. Be aware though their lead time is around 4-6 weeks for a simple sink.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the info, I did ordered one earlier, was a Franke one which is good to see was one of your recommendations :)

if fact it is the Ascona which is one you linked too, bad bit is I paid a bit more :( £270 for sink, tap and plumbing kit , your site has it at £223 , bugger

The one I have prdered is a 1 1/2 bowl reversable one in the 1000mm size, ordered a Franke tap and plumbing kit too so hopefully will all go together easily, stuff should come early next week and plumber at end of week

just realised we had a silk finish tap tap which added another 10 quid

still looks like I paid £37 too much though :(

oh and 1 last question, the plug on our current one pops up but turning a knob, any idea how these operate ?

Thanks

Good choice on the sink. Unfortunate about the price. A lot of stores have prett big markups especially on the Frankes.

If you are half handy then you could probably install it yourself and save some money on the pricey plumber. Franke taps are usually supplied with flexi hoses which are relatively easy to install.

Still you can be safe in the knowledge that you bought a quality product ;)

Thanks

shop did start out at about 50 quid more than we agreed on

any idea re the plug operation ? I edited the post above prob after you read it

plumber has quoted £75 which seems ok, says it may be cheaper if easy job

The popup waste on your current sink will have been supplied with the sink itself as part of the waste kit. Much the same as a popup waste on the bath or bathroom sink.

The Ascona you have ordered comes with 2 strainer wastes but these will be manual and will not pop up.

You could always mod your new sink to take the popup waste but i would not reccomend it as the finishes will likely be different and it would probably require butchering your new sink. In y xperience popup wastes are more hassle than they are worth though!

£75 seems not too bad to fit a sink and tap i guess. It should be pretty straight forward especially as you have ordered a plumbing kit to fit the sink. He should not need to supply any materials or cut the worktops at all either. Im not a plumber though so dont know the current going rate.

Ok thanks :)

our pop up was never that reliable but reaching under the dishes to close the waste sounds a pain too :D

You're welcome.

For the record im not some weirdo with a fetish for sinks I actually design Kitchens. Never thought it would be of any use on OCUK though :D
