My kitchen has just been renovated, and the electricians have placed one of the cooker switches
140mm from the gas hob.
I thought there was a minimum distance of 300mm, but am not sure if this is law or just guidance that they can ignore?

I know the cooker has to be 300mm away from a source of water, but I don't see why the socket would need to be.

There is no specific regulation or law about this, but there is an interpretation by the NHBC which states that 300mm is consisted to be safe. Like I say though, no specific law or regulation on the distance.

AFAIA there is no actual noted distance in any document but it is often recommended that the distance is 300mm as far as reasonably practical.
