Hi all,

My wife wants to get some new kitchen wall cabinets put on the wall which divides the kitchen to the front room as she wants more storage.

I’ve said fine, but she’s also expecting me to put them up, I’ve said I want a pro to put them up but quotes have come back as roughly £200 to put up 2-3 wall cabinets. To her, this is nuts as she thinks it’s a 5 minute job and just screwing in some screws.

So basically I’m asking, just how difficult will this be? I’ve not done hardly any DIY except to put up some shelves by drilling a small hole then using a screwdriver, driving in some wall plugs designed for plasterboard I think which seems to work well.

Firstly I’m concerned about the wall she wants them on, before she’s just wanted a shelf, however this wall seems a lot more sturdier than other walls, as in, I wasn’t able to screw in the above walls plugs with a screwdriver, I’m also concerned with getting it perfectly level and aligned as she will expect this to be perfect. This wall also contains the switches for the 2 lights and extractor fan.

So yeah, how difficult is this likely to be? Tools needed? Any recommendations on units?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You'll need a drill and a suitable drill bit, fixings to match the wall type, screwdrivers and a spirit level. Not a difficult job at all.

Choosing the correct fixings is probably the most taxing part. You'll need to work out how the wall is constructed for that (fully plasted brick, dot-and-dab, etc.).

Thanks for replying, just been watching some youtube videos, it seems simple enough I suppose, just got to work out how the wall is constructed. It's a new build from Persimmon, so I suspect as cheaply/quickly as possible.

My plasterboard is a bit 'old' and I've had hollow wall anchors not hold too well, so for belt and braces I removed the plasterboard in a strip where the cupboard fittings are, then put in a strip of MDF attached to the studs, then attached the units to that, and I can hang off the units, they are solid..

If you end up stuck in plasterboard.. these are absolutely amazing. IMO the BEST heavy duty hollow wall fixings you can get... GeeFix... I was just over 16st the last time I used them and a TV bracket didn't even budge.

Otherwise - as others have suggested - a timber (or ply) batten (personally I'd steer clear of MDF) between or across the studs will make it easier to fix to.

I fitted our kitchen years ago. Easy job really. Just used battens to take the weight and the proper fixing anchors to hold them against the wall. They never budged in 17 years despite being full of cans and stuff :)

Wow, those GeeFix things are seriously impressive. The trade pack of £25 for 26 of them (including p&p) is pretty good value.

Tbh if it's an IKEA lot you buy a long metal flat piece, level that on the wall then hang the cabinets straight off of that.

:P

Just to update, the wall the cabinets were to go on has like a double corner type join which came out by 30cm, told the wife it would probably not look right if you get something more than 30cm deep.

In the end, she doesn’t come back with kitchen cabinets, but a 4 box shelve thing from IKEA which was 39cm deep, I’m told she knows what she’s doing and I just need to worry about putting them on (obviously asap).

This only came with 3 brackets, so I decided to get some more brackets and put on an extra 3 brackets so there was a bracket in each corner and 2 in the middle.

I used the wall anchors linked earlier in the thread and got it on the wall and it felt very secure, to then be told by the wife that they don’t look right and to take it down, she managed to get most of her money back on the item the next day from facebook buy and sell.

She’s now decided she wants 2 full length shelves so is now shopping around for them, this wasn’t a totally pointless exercise however as I’ve discovered those wall anchors, let’s hope she buys appropriate shelves, I’ve given her the max dimensions, so we’ll see.

Thanks for the tips and advice all.
