Knackered power supply?

I recently purchased an ATi 2900xt (HIS) and have been enjoying playing stalker with everything turned on maximum.

I had noticed that the roof of my case was very hot but naturally assumed that the new card was generating plenty of excess heat. Today while playing, the computer powered down completely, no indication of error, nothing. It just turned off.

Now it won't turn on again. There is no sign of power to the motherboard, no LED's flickering at all. When the PSU is powered on I can hear a low pitched hum, when I press the power button on the front of the case the hum sounds lower but no further changes are noticed.

It seems as though the power supply has died.

The power supply itself is a cheap 600w job (WIN Power?) bought from OC's. Important to note that the power supply did not have any 6-pin power connectors that are required by the 2900xt. Instead I used standard 4 pin -> 6 pin adaptors purchased from ******.

I've been told 600w is plenty of juice for a single 2900xt but I've only noticed the excess heat since I bought the card.

In your experience is complete power off usually attributable to a shot PSU? Have already tried reseating cards & power cables etc.

Ta.

System:
MSI K98 Platinum
AMD x2 4600+
2gb OCZ pc6400 ram
ati 2900xt
600w psu (win power)
2x 120gb HDD's in RAID config (high ends)

cpu temperature has remained normal up until the system died.

its possible that your power supply has died, could you take the power supply out and read the sticker which gives different current output for the power supply. Look specifically for the 12v rails.

also golden rule of computers, whatever you skimp on do not do so with power supply. You best hope that the power supply has not taken out your motherboard or hd with it either.

while 600w may be plenty of juice it may be that the power supply you are using could be misinforming you and working under the wattage it was displayed at, typically like Q-Tec i bought a cheap one a while ago 400w and it operated at something like 285, just as well i took my 6800gt out of it and sold it before things started to heat up.

always stick with a major brand and check power supplys before you buy them via forum like here, they are the one of the peices of kit that can kill your pc.

i dont think its lying about a total of 18amps on the 12v rail....thats shockingly bad, by the way gobrun. my 620w corsair has a 50a 12v rail.

I would say yes, it probably is the psu. you need to spend some money on a decent one:)

That is probably a little over the top, nothing uses 1000W at the moment. Instead, go with a Corsair 520W/620W.

But assuming I want to run a second 2900 in Crossfire at some point in the not too distant future.

A 620W won't handle it right?
