got a x1900xt from ocuk on saturday morning and the damn thing is making a very weird noise. during 3d environments, it will be making a high pitch squeal which will go up and down in volume depending on whats on the screen. ive never heard anything like this before and its a real head scratcher for me
now, ive put a mates x800xl in and ran some games and all is dandy again, no noise anymore. so its got to be the card, it ran fine btw with my old x1800 without noises.
my concern is that i know OCUK are sometimes a little hasty when it comes to returns and testing them. and what i dont want to end up doing is to get into a tennis scenario where im sending this card back everytime i receive it from ocuk and them telling me its OK. does anyone know of any problems with these cards? ive been told it could be the capacitors leaking and/or the power circuitry thats shot. im looking for a technical term to include with the RMA to ocuk so that they can specificly look for this problem as its annoying as hell. and the performance isnt what i was expecting either so it could be having a negative effect on the cards performance overall.
has anyone got any advice that i can use to pass some info to ocuk on monday to make this sound a bit clearer? or any advice from Gibbo on what to do here? as like i say, i dont want to be in a long going saga and i only got it on saturday
/edit:
rest of specs-
psu: antec 480w neopower
opteron [email protected] no volt change
2gb corsair ram (2x1gb)
asus a8n sli
stock cooling in case and all hardware.
the psu has got split 12v rails, could this be a problem? im guessing no but thought id ask. its rated at 18a on one and 15a on the other 12v rail so thats a combined 33a which is enough right?
just ran 3dmark2005 (do ocuk have that on their test machines?)
and on the 2nd test it was making a slight noise but on the cpu tests it was making a massive amount of noise with the change of each frame, but i checked its not the cpu so im very confused.
is it possible a gfx card can be faulty regarding the 2d stuff maybe?
games used so far:
battlefield 2 - mainly in the server selection menu ironically but is less noisy in the actual game, but nonetheless still there.
condemned - noisy throughout
worms world party (which is a 2d game) - noisy throughout gameplay
command and conquer (generals/Zero hour) - noisy in game but especially during the menu system but also there in game.
oblivion - pretty bad in game and is there in menu aswell.
FEAR - very bad during menu selection
SERIOUSLY bad when trying to use 'automatic clock configuration' within the ati CCC.
when scanning for artifacts with ATI tool beta 14, there is a pulsating sort of noise from the card
