I've got some awful cheap knifes - the whole set cost about £3. They cut by being serrated rather than sharp. They were a stop gap measure until I buy really decent knives. I also have a couple of normal stainless steel knives from Homebase. They're ok too. And a 20 year old Kitchen Devil bread knife that's inexplicably good. I get by with that lot, but I do feel they're a bit naff. Some time (next year I imagine) I'll get a proper set of knives and spend a bit on them. Until then I need to make do with what I've got.
I do need a sharpener, and I'd like to buy one that'll do next year when I get decent knives.
I'm about to buy a Henckel's Sharpening Steel. Not diamond coated or anything, and not too expensive.
Is that the right thing to buy? I'm not looking for the absolute best, just something that's good at what it does, and at a reasonable level of value for money.
