Knives on aircraft

So, my friend who lives in Japan has agreed to import a handcrafted kitchen knife for me. Will he be able to take this in his checked baggage?

One certainly wont be a problem. I have a friend who is a chef and he travels regularly with his knives and hasnt had any problems that I know of.

Make sure he hasnt strapped it to his thigh and he should be fine.

I bought some pro knives back from the States a few years after 9/11 and there was no problem. You just declare them at check in that you have kitchen utensils in your luggage and they stick a sticker on your case letting the xray operators know what it is and you have declared it. Saves them opening your luggage to confirm the image.
