Noticed for the first time today, a slight knocking coming from the wheels (i think), and carries through the car when going over slightly uneven roads or bumps. Its the sort of noise that should normally be deadened when going over rough roads...

There are no irregular noises when driving normally, on normal roads.

I think its both the front wheels, but the rear may be going a similar way too - I didnt notice.

Can anyone shed some light on what the problem could be - hopefully i can get it sorted before it gets any worse!

Oh...car is a 306 DTurbo.

wheel bearing?

jack it up, grab top and bottom of wheel and try to rock it back and forwards.
any play and your wheel bearing is shot.

Thanks, I'll give it a go tomorrow

being from the front i would suggest its the drop links common failure on the 306, the above suggestion of the rear beam mounts is correct if its from the rear, but this is not the case.

from what i remember they are not much more than £20 a side, old ones can be a pig to remove its easier just to pull the grinder out and grind them off than to struggle ripping your knuckles apart

Expensive to repair?

And how come it sounds like its coming from the front of the car?

The subframe is on the front of the car, it has mounts on both the front and the back of the subframe. hence 'rear' mounts.

But...it sounds like the droplinks.

Could it just be bushes?
could be a few things, every vehicle has it's own known faults.
306 drop links are a favourite, they also go through wheel bearings if they're abused.
as always the golden rule is check out the "cheap fixes" first and eliminate them.
