Knock off Range Rover

Nothing you can do about it in China. That's the way it is.

On the other hand, I suspect that LR make an absolute killing in the Chinese market, and those that can afford the genuine article will buy the genuine article. Those that cant will buy this.

Is there any reason these Chinese cars can't be purchased privately and imported to the uk?
Because they're ****. Like worse than a Perodua ****.

They're also complete death traps.

Shocking.

You say that but the more recent offerings from several companies are much, much better than you might expect. These are the cars that have a high chance of coming to Europe soon, or in their next iteration, and those which are designed to appeal to more affluent, discerning (and in some cases younger) local customers.

The Qoros 3, for example, got five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests and was actually a pretty good car.

Hell, a recent Nissan product got zero stars - so that kind of failure for budget models is not unique to Chinese manufacturers.

Yeah I read about that Datsun as well - you get what you pay for.

I agree re the Qoros, but a lot of the cars, especially the knock-offs made for the domestic market are still ****.
Granted, that Brilliance is 7 years old and some of the Chinese manufacturers have moved on, but I can't imagine the knock-offs are going to be as good as the Qoros, which seems to be original and forward-thinking.

With the X5 rip-off I think the court case was actually brought by BMW through an Italian court, against the importer in that country. And still lost! Apparently it having a different grille made it ok.

As for the Evoque copy, there may be more clout for JLR to take action in China as these are a copy of the Evoques being produced by the government approved joint venture with Chery.

The level of protection for intellectual property in China isn't what you might call ironclad by any stretch of the imagination so the chances of a successful prosecution are probably not great. Although as you say it's a joint venture which has been approved so that might give the courts a certain incentive to apply IP protection rather more rigorously than has previously been the case.
