Recently bought a VW Golf MK3 1.4. Its been driving fine and I have been really happy with it. Over the last couple of days though, the steering has been heavier than usual (its not power steering) and when I take my foot off the accelerator to slow down, there's a knocking noise coming from somewhere.

It doesn't happen if I brake, it only happens when slowing down from taking my foot off the accelerator

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you :)

Probably something you want to get checked out by a mechanic if you're not sure what you're looking at. The engine mounts mount the engine (suprisingly :)) to the car. When you back off the throttle, the engine will rock and if the mounts are knackered you'll hear a knocking.

Not sure why the steering would be heavier though - did both problems start at the same time?

My vote is on engine mounts!

Put it out of gear, hold onto something solid on the top of the engine and push it back and forth as hard as you can.

Hearing nothing doesn't mean its not the cause, just might be an easy identifier!

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

I am getting it checked out tomorrow hopefully, so will post back confirmation.

The steering happened at a different time to the knocking. Its been getting worse though and I thought it might be related.

Does anyone know if the steering in a MK3 golf is really heavy?

Thanks again :)

The heavier steering could just be the tyres needing a bit more air.

I feel silly but that has really improved the steering. Thanks for that :D

As for the knocking noise... The mechanic said someone was trying to pinch my wheels  He tightened them all up again and the noise is gone... Time to get an alarm!

Thanks for the help everyone :)
