Little worried, drove back to stoke from derby tonight and started hearing a knocking noise from the engine

its not consistant, i've tried 2nd/3rd/4th and it only seems to happen in at around 2.5k rpm apart from in 3rd it happens at just past 3k rpm, i dont seem to get it at all in 5th/6th. the engine is a toyota 1.8 vvti but it doesnt change the valve timings till around 3.5k rpm from what i know

im gonna try and get it looked at tomorrow, question is should i be driving it? i need to go 12 miles to work in the morning and 12 miles back, aside from the noise im not noticing any other effect like a drop in power, id leave it at home and get a taxi but its due for tax/mot/service end of this month and im already skint, cant afford to be wasting £30 on taxis

My friends Fiesta had a clicking noise after he somehow managed to squeeze 115mph out of the thing and 3 days later the engine went pop, alas he's had a new one fitted

Get it looked at asap and only drive if you have to imo

I wouldn't say clicking noise = almost certain death. It's probably drivable but just get it looked at. If it hasn't affected power at all, i know this sounds simple and stupid but have you opened her up and just checked something isnt astray, or is it not that type of knocking?

I blew the big ends on a 950cc Mk2 Fiesta attempting to acheive a simmilarly stupid feat, but it certainly wasn't a clicking noise, more like someone taking a jack hammer to the engine...

i dont know enough about an engine to do that, i do like to tinker with things but it would be a rather expensive thing to take apart and not be sure how it goes back together

the noise seems to be in time with the engine and i couldnt hear it when it wasnt in gear but then whatever it is might need there to be load on the engine, checked the oil and that was ok, no sign of mayo on the dipstick

month or so ago a metal plate over the exhaust came loose and was bouncing of it causing a metalic ringing sound, i checked and that was still firmly in place

edit: its an 01 celica, shouldnt the engine management pick up if it were knocking?

Well its beginning to sound expensive, toyota have taken a quick look at it and say it sounds like something low down in the engine, possibly even the crankshaft

gonna cost me £90 for them to open the sump and find out for definate, then if they have to strip the engine down and replace something like that upto £500 in labour costs

i've taken the hit on the £90 and left it with them, ill see what the outcome is and maybe take it to another garage :(
