My mother has asked me if I can get some important files off an old computer belonging to her work (they have given permission etc to work on it for them).

Now, it all sounds rather easy cos the computer is still just about running - though it is really really slow and keeps crashing - however there are two problems than make it a little more tricky.

1) It's not recognising the CD drive - it opens and closes the tray but windows doesn't recognise the drive.

2) it doesn't have drivers/won't recognise any USb memory sticks etc etc.

Now, I'm hoping that the CD drive will still read disks and I can use my Knoppix Live CD to get the computer running.

I'm fairly sure I've done this before but just want to check, will Knoppix give me USB support so I can either use an external USB HDD to copy the required files onto or a USB Stick???

If the CD drive doesn't read the Knoppix disk I'll have to whip the HDD out and read it with another computer which is fine but I'd really rather not have to mess about as I'm doing it this evening and will just be wanting to get home!!! lol

I thought it did, as I say I think I've done it like that before on another computer I was working on.

Just got to hope the CD drive will read the CD now!!! lol

I've not heard of Slax, I assume it's another operating system on a disk - will go have a look.

Is it much the same as Knoppix? I assume it will have USB support too.

Annoyingly I've seemingly misplaced my Knoppix CD and now I'm at work I can't download it, so I'm gonna give Slax a try.

Does just the basic ISO include everything I'd need for USB support?
