Hi I want to go from 1gb memory to 2GB.

I currently have 2x 512mb sticks in my PC at the minute from the manufactor PQI. details on the stick says DDR-400 512MB

Is it inportant that I only buy PQI memroy to put in my PC to match the same make of the sticks I have at the minute, or can I buy any type of memory I want as long as it says DDR-400 on it ?

Little confused

Hi,

You can put any other make of memory in the mobo as long as you try and keep it the same speed (i.e. DDR400 PC3200) and latency in order to avoid any problems. If for whatever reason, you were to fit a DDR333 PC2700 module in, then your system would be forced to run at the slower speed (i.e. the weakest link). However, it is usually much easier just to sell what you have and start afresh. :) Also, it pays to just have 2x1Gb modules instead of 4x512Mb modules although this depends a lot on what mobo and cpu you are running.

If it's on an PC with an A64 CPU, then 2x1Gb modules are more desirable as it puts less strain on the on-board memory controller and also allows for a 1T command rate to be run (which improves performance).

What mobo and CPU have you got fella?

Some quick ideas of what i'd suggest,

G.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 (2x1GB) CAS2 Dual Channel Kit - £152.69 (inc.VAT)

or some GeIL Value (decent RAM also)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 - £135.07 (inc.VAT)

But tbh for the £20 difference the G.Skill is a better choice. :)

No worries, I'd defo suggest 2x1Gb modules, and would happily recommend the G.Skill that I mentioned above to go with that CPU. :)

Great RAM!
