I'm going to Edinburgh on the 29th of May for 6 days (5 nights) and I'm having trouble finding any accommodation under £350 for 5 nights. I'm meeting my girlfriend there (her idea to go on such short notice) and I have no idea what to do when we get there. So two questions really...

1. Does anyone know of any cheap places to stay? I need a 2 person room or even a camp site in reasonable distance of Edinburgh, say 3-4 miles walk.
I am having no luck with the internet searches so I'd thought I'd try local or general knowledge

2. Can anyone recommend anything to do there. All I know of is the castle, the heart you spit on and (a bit nerdy) the Rockstar North place is there.

If anyone can help (especially on the first!) it would be much appreciated. I've tried scouring the internet to no avail. Thanks for your time.

There's a studenty hostel place on the outskirts that we stayed in for a stag do. They run a minibus to and from Waverley station every 15 mins. Was cheap andfriendly too. Can't think of the name off the top of my head though. Would expect a google for hostels to show it up.

Edinburgh is a great city. Loads of good places to drink. The zoo is cool (esp for the womenfolk) Do the open top bus tour. £8 each I think. The castle is ok too.

I'll have a look for the hostel on google and the zoo sounds good. I didn;t know they had a zoo, shows just how much I know about edinburgh I guess. Thanks for the reply.

A very quick Google reveals a couple of campsites within fairly easy distance, the Caravan Club one might be of use although a bit too close to Muirhouse for my liking. If you want somewhere 3-4 miles or less from the centre then it probably won't be suitable, my parents live within the city boundaries (just) and it is a good 6+ miles into the centre of town. Other than that maybe try looking at B&Bs, you aren't in the high season yet so it might be possible to get a deal.

Rockstar North building isn't that terribly exciting, it is just an office block really, same as most games companies. Definitely take a walk down the Royal Mile (past the Heart Of Midlothian that you mention), a tour bus is a good idea as mentioned.

Many thanks to you, I had a look and it looked awesome until I got the earful down the phone from the ball and chain explaining how she is not a fan of tents after some experience in Borneo. However, one the reviews of the site mentioned the globetrotter inn across the road and I got a room for half the price of everywhere else I could find!

My thanks are infinite, with the recent stresses of college and hospital events this minor victory has taken a bit if weight off my shoulders. Thanks again.

I know a fantastic campsite, but it's more 5-6 miles out from the city centre. You actually stay in 'wigwam' lodges on the site and it's 14 quid a night. This includes heating, electricity and the bed.

It costs 7 quid for the taxi into the city centre and it's £1 for the night bus back which runs until 3am... can't beat it.

I've been twice now and planning on going back again for sure.

There's plenty to do up there even it's just touring about. Stop off in a few pubs/bars or shop?

Hope this helps a little.

Accommodation in Edinburgh is totally OTT. If I need to stay over I always stay at a hotel near Glasgow Queen Street station or a B&B in Linlithgow. The trains are every 15min in the day and 30 min in the evenings and the saving in cost on accommodation is about 5x the cost of the train tickets (a weekly season ticket was £30 to Linlithgow last time I used one).

There is a newish Youth Hostel at the top of Leith bombsite, I mean Leith walk. Very close to Rockstar North but theres no much to see;)

Look for Mary King's Close, the zoo, midnight witch tours, the vaults, Edinburgh Dungeons, RY Britannia.

I stayed in a nice little guest house near the centre when my friends and I were there last October and it included an excellent breakfast. We payed £50/night (per room for two people in each room) during the low season. I think it would be considered midseason right now so prices should be £56/night (based on two people). Much better than a hostel imo.

It's called the Mackenzie Guest House.
