I swear, I'm never ever going to buy another Dell laptop again. This Studio has been the biggest heap of junk I've had the misfortune to own. Not to mention, Dell's technical support is shocking.
In January 2009, I treated myself to a Studio 1737. It worked fine for about 11 months until the battery would no longer charge. When the battery was inserted and power applied, the charging LED would light for about 2 seconds before going off again. When the system was powered on, it would pop up a message about the power adapter being incompatible, despite trying another Dell power supply.
I contacted Dell support and it took 6 weeks for them to pick the laptop up from the correct address (I'd moved house) despite me giving them the correct address 3 times and telling them not to go to the old address because I didn't live there any more.
In this time, the warranty expired and my laptop arrived back a couple of weeks later with the charging issue fixed. I also had an issue with the speakers distorting at low volume which was also repaired when it went in but have since had to reflash the firmware on the hard disk due it the click of death (known issue with the firmware putting the drive through too many sleep cycles).
Anyway, the laptop has worked well for about another 11 months. I've literally just turned it on and what do you know, exactly the same charging fault. I'm less than impressed. Not what I expected from a £700 laptop.
It's not as though I abuse the laptop either. Until I sold my desktop machine quite recently, the laptop probably got about 8 hours of use a month. If the battery is fully charged and I'm leaving it plugged in, I remove it. Is this a known issue and if so, can I throw the sales of goods act at Dell and get it repaired? I'm NOT paying for a repair and don't really feel that 11 months of light use is a suitable lifespan for a motherboard.
Sorry for the rant but as you can imagine, I'm not happy.
