Known charging issue for Dell Studio 1737?

I swear, I'm never ever going to buy another Dell laptop again. This Studio has been the biggest heap of junk I've had the misfortune to own. Not to mention, Dell's technical support is shocking.

In January 2009, I treated myself to a Studio 1737. It worked fine for about 11 months until the battery would no longer charge. When the battery was inserted and power applied, the charging LED would light for about 2 seconds before going off again. When the system was powered on, it would pop up a message about the power adapter being incompatible, despite trying another Dell power supply.

I contacted Dell support and it took 6 weeks for them to pick the laptop up from the correct address (I'd moved house) despite me giving them the correct address 3 times and telling them not to go to the old address because I didn't live there any more.

In this time, the warranty expired and my laptop arrived back a couple of weeks later with the charging issue fixed. I also had an issue with the speakers distorting at low volume which was also repaired when it went in but have since had to reflash the firmware on the hard disk due it the click of death (known issue with the firmware putting the drive through too many sleep cycles).

Anyway, the laptop has worked well for about another 11 months. I've literally just turned it on and what do you know, exactly the same charging fault. I'm less than impressed. Not what I expected from a £700 laptop.

It's not as though I abuse the laptop either. Until I sold my desktop machine quite recently, the laptop probably got about 8 hours of use a month. If the battery is fully charged and I'm leaving it plugged in, I remove it. Is this a known issue and if so, can I throw the sales of goods act at Dell and get it repaired? I'm NOT paying for a repair and don't really feel that 11 months of light use is a suitable lifespan for a motherboard.

Sorry for the rant but as you can imagine, I'm not happy.

Have seen loads of Dells with the problem, it is very common, either the charger fails, or the motherboard fails to recognise the charger and doesn't charge the battery.

Its not just on this model either, the 15xx series suffer from it as well.

I would certainly give them a good talking to and see if they can get it repaired again.

Hi beermonster,

Thanks for that, glad to hear it's not an isolated issue. It's so frustrating... I decided to buy a Dell machine because I wanted a well known brand. Wish I'd never had bothered now.

I'll get in touch (if I can find my way around their quite frankly god-awful website) and see what they say. I'm definitely not going to take it on the chin.

I have had a load of problems with my Inspiron 1564.

I had the noisy fan which constantly run once the system warmed up, even sitting there idle, after this was replaced the gpu failed, or kept having BSOD soon as the driver was installed.
Dell fitted a new motherboard then a week later the laptop failed to start.
At this point I had enough with this laptop, sent a email got a reply the next day then a few days later a phone call saying a new laptop would be on it's way which arrived yesterday.
May try and sell in the MM.

beermonster is right - charging problems are common throughout the range. Usually to do with the system board not identifying the charger and therefore refusing to charge. Check that your AC input on the laptop is intact and not missing the centre plastic pole. Also check that the central pin on the charger connector is intact and not bent/broken. Do you know someone with a charger you can try to rule out charger failure? Maybe a nearby computer shop that might have one you can try? On this model it will usually be a system board, but can also be the AC/USB daughterboard that the charger actually plugs in to. Good luck getting it sorted out...
