Kodi box share hd

Is it possible to share a usb hd connected to a Kodi box to local network and able to copy files to it?

For example if I have a file on my phone or computer and want to copy that file on the HD to the Kodi box.

I'm able to do this with files on the nas but would be useful being able to copy to the HD so I don't need to connect and disconnect the USB Hd eveytime

I'm possibly late to the party with a response, but is this with an android box?

I can connect to my Nvidia shield (android TV os) over SMB, so yes, you should be able to share your usb drive over the network.

depends on the underline os but there various options for doing it.
from old school ftp / smb / ssh / webdav and a host of other options.
so it should be possible to do it like @jellybeard999 said.

NFS was my fave for serving a rpi.
