Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has revealed that he would implement a subscription service into Call Of Duty 'tomorrow' if he could.

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Kotick said he believed the move would bring an even bigger audience to the franchise.

"I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow", he said.

"When you think about what the audience's interests are and how you could really satisfy bigger audiences with more inspired, creative opportunities, I would love to see us have an online Call of Duty world.

"I think our players would just have so much of a more compelling experience.

"I think our audiences are clamoring for it. If you look at what they're playing on Xbox Live today, we've had 1.7 billion hours of multiplayer play on Live. I think we could do a lot more to really satisfy the interests of the customers.

"I think we could create so many things, and make the game even more fun to play. We haven't really had a chance to do that yet, so that would be my snap of the fingers".

However, when asked if he could make his dream a reality, Kotick was less certain, merly commenting "hopefully".

Thoughts?

I would be intrigued to know what they would do with it if it was sub based. All map packs free? Depending on what they did with it, I might be interested.

However, the problem is that I already pay to access Live, now this becomes a major issue as I think it's totally unfair to charge two sub services, it could get stupid and if every game needed a nother sub on top of live.......

I see talk of a subscription but nothing solid to hook me in. I'm "clamouring" in the opposition direction at the moment...

Oh and people already pay a subscription that's wrapped up in an onslaught of map packs that break match making if you dont buy them.

It hardly breaks matchmaking if people don't have the map packs. I don't see your point as valid on that one.

It seems to work perfectly on CoD MW2.

I really don't see it going any further as I imagine MS would be against this sort of thing.

Yes, the game disables DLC as people in the party/friends do not have the map packs.

I take it you are talking about MW? In which I agree, that did just break the game, you got booted back to the main screen.

It seems they have sorted it out, and it does work well this time around.

Ah right. I'll shut my beak then. :D

I can understand how the abject failure of their COD series would leave them scrabbling for cash in any way possible.
I heard that to unlock the online play in COD:Black Ops you have to write over your soul to them and each DLC pack will cost one toe.

I don't game online with the 360 mainly due to the price.

It's an extra £30-40 a year for Live, plus they charge for map packs, its pretty disgraceful tbh. Now wanting to charge a sub for playing it as well.

You'd only get the hardcore players subbing, everyone else would just change games. Only the hardcore play enough to warrant paying a sub for it.

This simply wont work on the consoles it will hurt game sales kids just wont be in a position to pay sub fees for a game.

i fail to see what this would bring to the game. This isnt world of warcraft.

Plus, what happens if everybody else follows the same, a sub for every game you play, and xbox live subs ? gonna get very expensive at that rate.

No thanks.

If it created free map packs/other DLC then maybe it could be justifiable.

But on top of a Live subscription....just no way.

Valve do the map packs / DLC for their games for free.

Make the original game good enough, then put enough development into giving the community what they want, and keeping it fresh and bug free, and they shall come.

So what they want is for people to pay for the game, pay for the DLC, pay for an Internet connection, pay for the console and peripherals, pay for a subscription to Xbox Live and then pay for a subscription to COD as well?

Get real. Maybe they can make the next game innovative as MW --> MW2 was not a very big step up, if a step up at all to be honest. It's still enjoyable and yes I play it daily, but if this was a subscription based game then I think they would say goodbye to a lot of the more adult players. Kids would probably still lap it up as they get their parents to pay for it for them.

I think it would depend strongly on what they offered for the sub.

As I have said, if it included the DLC, then it could be viable on the PS3/PC, but I would not bother with it at all on the 360 as I refuse to pay a sub for live access and then have to pay a sub to play a game online as well when I pay my monies to MS.

How much is a sub for WOW? And what kind of stuff do they get included in that? To be honest I think even if it was say £20 a year that isn't worth it. The MW2 DLC is going for £10 and that is an absolutely ridiculous price for 2 new maps and 2 rehashes from MW. I guess it depends how much stuff they offer but still, I would strongly consider playing a different franchise if they were to offer a subscription but not improve on what COD is offering us at the moment. In it's current form it doesn't even warrant £40 seeing as it feels more like an expansion pack to Modern Warfare.

You would hope for dedicated servers too, for a start. Let alone anything else.

Yeah that would be a good start. I don't see subscription services for Multiplayer really kicking off on consoles though. Maybe they have a case on the PC, as all the PC version of MW2 was, was a straight port of the console version pretty much. Give them back the dedicated servers, chuck in 2 or 3 DLC's per year and maybe the PC crowd would be a bit happier. Don't see it happening on consoles.

stupid thing is, valve dont charge for hosting dedicated servers, they just let the software become available for free, let people advertise their website in the name, and in the message of the day on connect etc.. and people use it for advertising.

but thats the problem, i doubt microsoft would ever allow that, the same way they wouldnt allow valve to add the extra DLC to TF2 on the xbox as they said it was too much and had to be chargable.

Pay a monthly sub for a hacked game, not on your life. The only way I'd consider a pay sub is if they sell the game for a tenner, drop the xbox live charge and then charge me £3 a month to play my fav game.

I will never pay £35 for a game, £30 a year for xbl and then a monthly fee to play the game online. I'd just go play something else for the amount of online play I have.
