KOTOR still doesn't work

Meh, got over 2 hours into KOTOR this time (over a period of a few days of light playing) before the crashes started. Using a Radeon 9600 Pro video card (I know, it's prehistoric, don't rub it in...) which I know has problems with the game, but it's patched to the latest version, and installed onto a pretty clean hard drive with a relatively fresh Windows install. :o

I've always had problems with the KOTOR games, and never been able to fix them...even their tech support couldn't help me, after some lengthy conversations (they never admitted that as such, but they were just going in circles with the solutions). Tech support kept telling me to update an old soundcard driver or something, but there isn't actually a newer driver as far as I could tell, so I never got very far. But I digress...

Basically looking to see if anyone knows how to fix this. The KOTOR games are great, but total system freezes every few minutes (requiring a reboot to fix) aren't fun. I'm still on Taris - I know Dantooine has severe problems with 9600s, can't recall if Taris does though. Both KOTOR games do this, the second one moreso than the first...I actually had a warning come up on the character selection screen saying 'I am broken, so very very broken' instead of the names of the characters (and all the characters had disappeared, so I was effectively solo - that was a savegame bug of some sort, I think).

Thanks

i cant see that it can be your 9600 as i have played thru and complete both KOTOR 1&2 with my 9600 and not had a crash once :S it mite be a game patch thats required? i never patched the game once so maybe it's the game patches that are causing the crashes.

i never patched the game once an it ran from start to finish on a 5900xt which i hear the 9600 series gets compared to some times.

try an older graphics driver m8 maybe something in the newer ones is messing up?

just out of curiosity what sound card are you running? i was running a oem audigy through both the games no problem.

i never let the games run from the cd's tho but i cant say any thing else about that :)

Had similar problems on my old 9800 pro, in some of the parts the game would have a major slow down to around 1-2 frames a second and then it would just freeze. Eventually ATi fixed it in their next driver update and I was able to finish both games after that.

It sounds very similar to my problem so I would just try updating to the latest drivers (Catalyst 7.5) and see if that fixes it. Failing that try and find Catalyst 6.7 I think it was that one that fixed all my problems.

Doing a search also turned up these problems with Ati cards (all fixed apparently)

The 5900 would have totally different drivers/architecture to the 9600 though, so it's no wonder it worked. :p

The soundcard is an old, built in C-Media thing. I've also tried the game (ages ago) with the sound coming from my Toneport (guitar recording gizmo, but it's got the ability to act as a soundcard) and it still crashed, so I don't think it's the souncard.

I've already patched it, as I said, and flaws relating to the 9600 series of cards are fairly well-known. Maybe you're just lucky. :p

I'm using the latest drivers, but I might hunt down 6.7 and give that a go, thanks. I knew there was one that had fixed the problems, but I didn't know which one it was, so yo've saved me some effort. :)
