KOTR - Help, I can't decide on a build!

Hello, well I have now spent nearly 3 hours trying to decide what character build to make and I'm lost. So I hope you guys can help me, here are some of my questions:

1) Soldier/Councilar build, is it suited to a first time play through and is it suited to light or dark side? The reason I ask is because on darkside I feel that that evil robot is a must have but that requires repair work which requires a different class to soldier.

2) Just how much fun is a soldier/guardian? It sounds very restricted and potentially a bit dull with lack of customization.

The reason I ask these questions is because I am unsure if I would rather use the force or a saber. So It is a choice between soldier, scoundrel or mixing soldier with councilar. What would you recommend?

If it makes a difference I am considering a dark side play through.

Thanks.

:edit:

Would scout/gaurdian be better due to then getting repair and implants free?

Pretty sure scout/any jedi is fine if you need repair for hk, the main tips I would say to a new player is do not take ANY feats that will be obsolete when you become a jedi - such as focus in blaster etc. Also if you dont mind it being at bit harder at the start DO NOT level up at all after you are level 2 till you get jedi (so you get more levels of jedi total) but i'm sure you know these tips judging by all the research you have done.

Anyway yeah I would say scout is fine I have had some fun scout/X runs, scoundrel/X is my least fave don't do it unless you wanna pick doors yourself and/or want a high armor class build.

Been a while since I played though so I can't guarantee i'm not forgetting anything.

I would recommend Scout/Consular (my personal favourite) or Scout/Guardian if you want to focus on melee combat.

Scout to 5 (at level 4 you get uncanny dodge and implant 2, level 5 an extra feat) then 15 levels of what ever you choose.

At level 5 all of the initial quests can be done with no real difficulty, Starkiller can be a nuisance just make sure you have shields and grenades.

I leave strength at 10, lightsabers can use the higher of dex and str for to hit, damage can come from power crystals. Can make things slightly more difficult to start with though.

As said above, repair is a great skill for fixing up HK, and persuade is another useful skill for your main character.

Dark side is much more fun :)

Haha I had been thinking so hard about this game before bed that all my dreams were about starwars today. Oh my!

Indeed I had come across this though from what I have read it is quite important to point these things out to any new comer. From my understanding if you are going scoundrel you should aim to be a jedi at level 2 or 5 and scout is best aimed at level 5 and soldier level 5 or 7.

Yeah scout is looking promising, typically ign say its the worst class but I've come to learn that they don't actually know anything.

Scout/Consular looks like the way forward. Though my second play through would likely be a scoundrel so maybe I should go scout/guardian then scoundrel/consular. I shall make my decision soon as I'm starting the game up, ready to kick some ass! haha

Thanks for all the help guys

There's some good info on GameFAQs. The game itself runs mostly off of the NWN / D20 engine and Jedis are mostly a variation on the Monk class so any lightsaber wielder should mostly be based around Dex/Wis. Dual wielding looks cool, but you always take a big hit in accuracy for frequency of attacks - bosses you will miss against (a lot) - favour dex for melee, wis/cha for caster.

Your starting class should probably not be the fighter archetype one, as you get a load of feats that are useless later game, so it's a choice between skills/implants/sneak attacks. Your second chance should either be Guardian or Consular, Sentinel ends up not being good at anything.

Guardian is more effective if you don't pick light/dark side as you can spend powers in neutral areas like Jedi Speed etc. Consular, you have to make a choice. Light side is more crowd control/support - Dark side is more DPS.

Light side is harder to play through dialogue options as well I found, because you can't just threaten people into doing what you want.

Yes, it is a bit fiddly, though the guide is reasonably good, and I guess it only needs to be done once.

I guess it just depends on whether or not the black borders bother you...

I set 1280x960 on my 1680x1050 display and its fine. Although it is nice playing at full rez. I seem to remember that if you use the tweak then the mini map doesn't show properly. You can still access the full map (m?) normally though.

Hope that helps!
