Ksanti or anyone else using 24mm prime

a up SsSsSid, i use 24mm primes a lot. I use canon and wanted a wide prime so i got the 24mm f2.8. I found it to be great on my 40d crop as a general use lens very sharp and compact. It works well for landscape and building shots as 24mm is about as wide as you can go without getting noticable distortion, this make it a good focal length multi shot panos. 24mm is great for full length people/street images but not ideal for close up portraits ie head shots as you will get a lot of the background in the shot.
Last year i dropped on a 24mm l at a good price and this is superb for night shots as it has a very wide aperture f 1.4.

these were hand held f2.2 1/30 iso800

cheers, if you need it mainly for street/enviromental portraites then 30-35mm would suit better ive never used the the canon 28mm usm or the sigma 30mm but they are both well rated. I do have the canon 35mm f2 and this is a good inexpensive lens. The f2 is an old design so the focus motor is buzzy but it works well and is pin sharp wide open. Its also very compact so does not draw atention. I took this with the 35mm wide open at f2

I've got the Sigma 24 1.8, and to be honest I haven't used as much as I'd like. My use for it is mostly landscapes, particularly long exposures with a 9stopper, and for the awesome perspective that the pseudo macro focusing distances affordd with the wide angle; you can pretty much get it to focus on stuff inside the lens hood.

Tbh I don't use it enough to really give a comment but the 28 1.8 is meant to be a very nice lens; I just wanted something that had the close focus of the Sigma. I wouldn't really recommend the Sigma unless you wanted that close focus as there is a little bit of wobble in the barrel which doesn't feel great and the autofocus is very slow on the 5D, but as a perspective it's something you always want to have covered.

Consider if you really need a prime for it though; I did to get the close focus, but if you don't need it wide open (i.e. you're using it for landscapes mainly) consider something like a Canon 20-35 or Canon 17-40L instead for a little more range.

Tthank you guys appreciate your help.i really would prefer a prime and am torn between the 28mm cannon and the sigma 30mm,Ksanti were your comments on the barrel wobble just related to the 24mm or were you talking generally about the sigma's. Nice shot Throttle
thanks

How would you compare the 24mm variants to the Sigma 12-24 for sharpness/quality in general?

I've got the 12-24mkI from Sigma, and while I like it, I find it a bit soft compared to the 50mm 1.4 and canon 70-200. Stopped down it's a nice little lens, but I'm considering a new wide angle (have been for months really, as I've mentioned before). The new mkII 12-24 seems better, but still a lot less sharp than primes.

Ideally full frame camera use would better suit the 12-24 as 12mm on a crop seems a bit odd.

I've had a nose at a few google search results and there doesn't seem to be much in the various types. I'm assuming this is a similar situation as the 85mm L and the 1.8 version?

I have the buyers itch as I've been working overtime for a month :D

Haven't used any 24/28mm but I have the Sigma 30mm and outside work, it's my most used lens. Sharp and the focus is spot on. I don't have any problem with a wobbly barrel.

Just the 24, the 85 I have has lovely build quality.

Did you end up going with the 5D Classic in the end? If you did, don't go with the Sigma 30; the 30 can only be used on crop cameras.

The Canon 28 is a very well reviewed lens and I'm sure it wouldn't disappoint

hi Ksanti,i had the 5dc in my hand but opted for a 550d for now.I have a friend with a 5dc a 5d2 and a a7d so I'm hoping when he gets the 5d3 i can perhaps get the 2 off him,be a while yet though, yes I've decided the 28 it is. thanks again
