I posted a thread in here a while ago about the Acer Predator X32QFS. A 32 inch 4k, 150Hz, IPS miniled monitor with 1152 dimming zone. I was very impressed with it but it had a few issues, HDR didn't work quite right and it had a problem with remembering settings when switching modes. The thing that made me return it in the end was the PWM dimming which was causing havoc with my eyes!! However, despite returning it, I thought it was a great monitor. It showed me just how good MiniLED monitors could be, especially when using HDR. And I have been searching for another Miniled monitor since.
Due to work changes, I had to seriously reduce my budget to under £300 and I thought that ended the possibility of upgrading from my current 10 year old Asus MG279Q to either a MiniLED or an OLED. However, last month KTC rode to the rescue with the release of the KTC M27T6. And I purchased one last week. Here are my thoughts on it.
The price is amazing, that's my first thought. For around £260 you are getting the following, a 27 Inch 1440P monitor. HVA Panel, 180hz refresh rate, 1152 dimming zones and HDR1400. I couldn't believe the price when I saw it.
Then I checked to see if it had PWM, as a lot of MiniLED monitors have PWM and I was so happy when I saw the M27T6 has DC dimming. My eyes rejoiced!!
Build Quality isn't bad, but it doesn't feel as premium as other monitors. But, the stand is steady, it doesn't take up a lot of room and has all the adjustments you would need. No issues with the that side of things. Next up was checking for dead pixels and please to report that none were to be seen. It's missing a few features, no speakers, no USB hub, no KVM. None of that matters to me personally, but I know for some people those are important. It does have a USB port to do firmware upgrades which is a plus!!
What about the VA black smearing you say? Yes it's there, I doubt most people would notice it. I am particularly susceptible to it and I don't rate it as a problem at all, it's negligible. The viewing angles are poor, typical VA, since it's a 27 inch monitor it's not a problem. When I first turned on the monitor though, I was like this is terrible, the viewing angles were shockingly bad. Then I changed one setting on the monitor and everything was much improved!! More on that later.
More good points. HDR looks amazing on this. Blown away by good it is. It doesn't forget settings either(well not exactly, explain later) The HDR Display mode is so bright and everything looks crisp and clear. It's a feast for the eyes. It has a few different HDR modes, Display, Game, Cinema and a HDR 600 mode if the others are too bright for you. It also has four local dimming modes. off, auto, low, standard and high. The Local dimming is done really well, very little blooming. Other features include MPRT, VRR(can't use both at the same time) and RGB (if anyone actually wants that
)
What about the bad points other that what I said above? There is some VRR flicker according to reviews. I haven't noticed it yet in game. But it's problem with both VA and OLED panels. The other thing is the black equalise setting. For some reason it's set at 50 when you get the monitor. It makes everything look terrible, washed out, poor colours, bad viewing angles. However when I set it down to 0, everything looked fantastic. So much better. I set it to 10 in games and 0 when using the desktop. There is one other annoying thing about the black equalise. When you change modes, like frorm HDR to SDR or change the colour space the black equalise setting changes. It might say it's at 0 but it's actually gone back up to 50 and you have to raise it in the settings to 50 and back to 0 to get the monitor looking good again. The other thing is the local dimming, auto doesn't work properly when you are in SDR mode on the desktop. It causes flickering when you open and close windows on the desktop. If you turn it off, no flickering.
Will be keeping this monitor. Sure there are some minor niggles and it has the drawbacks of VA, but the positives far outweigh the negatives and the price is just so good!!
