I am slightly confused by what upload and download limits I need to enter for my Virgin 20meg cable - I don't know how "KiB/s" translates to my connection

Ideally I want to set 10 meg as the download (half the speed) and say 256k for upload

I'll check them out

I think it is this:
20000 kb as reported by some speed test sites, 8 bits per byte, so 20000/8 = 2,500 KiB for download. If I want about half of my download bandwidth used, then 1,000 will do

Upload - I think is about 700kb, so 700/8 = 87 approx, so a settling less than 50

you'll saturate your upload limit really quickly and be put on STM

I'd set the upload as 20 as a sensible max that won't effect your speeds, maybe set to 10 when gaming

Good point, thanks. I'll check their traffic management limits and hours of operation. I'll probably just download during the night so it may not be an issue

i'm assuming ktorrent is a copy of utorrent, in which case, you may be able to set schedules in it..

ie, during the day, limit the download/upload speeds

Not really a copy (other than it's a bittorrent client). It has similar features, but is more like the official bit torrent client or deluge and yes, you can set schedules, etc.

I've hardly ever used a bittorrent client. Last time I did in Windows something strange happened, the file I downloaded was legit and above board, but suddenly in my yahoo sent mail folder were spam emails that I had obviously not sent... This time, I'm running Linux in a virtual machine using KTorrent, should be a bit safer

If that's the point, then get an AV installed in the virtual machine. there's really very little chance of the linux box getting infected, but something like clamav or avast will scan for windows viruses, etc.

More like the other way around, ktorrent is older ;-) its the KDE Torrent client, its not bad at all actually.
