Was working fine last night, did an update and now the machine freezes on bootup.

Being a complete newbie, I've no idea what the issue is. I can access the recovery menu, and can boot to the root shell, but I'm completely clueless as to finding out why it won't boot to the KDE desktop normally.

Anyone know of a guide to enable me to find out what the issue might be?

Is there a boot log I can access from the command line?

There was a kernel update. On the grub menu there should be another entry that allows you to boot using the previous kernel ('previous linux versions' or something). Try a previous kernel that worked. There may be a change in the new kernel that doesn't suit your hardware.

Yeap this worked, thank you..

So I take it, I have to boot to the previous version of the Kernal every time now, as the 3.5.20 (I think) kernal is potentially incompatible.
