Hi all.

I cant seem to get the nvidia drivers working under this distro. The default driver works no problem but i have read image quality with videos will be much better under the proper nvidia driver.

I have installed the nvidia-glx-new package, backed up my xorg.conf file and executed nvidia-glx enable or whatever it was.

The problem im getting is that kde will no longer start up. I just get a flashing prompt on a black screen. The only way to get back to kde is to revert back to the original xorg.conf then restart the xserver.

I have also manually edited the xorg.conf and changed the "nv" to "nvidia" which still didnt help. I have read the other ways of going about it are to use envy? or use the nvidia drivers and probably recompile the kernel?

I just used Automatix to install the drivers for my nvidia card... although mine is a lowly 6600, but can't see that it makes that much difference (er, to the installation, I mean - obviously it makes a huge difference to what's displayed on screen :D)

Automatix just makes it so easy. Have you thought about trying that?

Im new to all this linux stuff so i havent come across it yet. Ill take a look thanks.

Im considering trying the 32 bit version just in case aswell as mandriva spring to see if they work.

I'd give Automatix a try before switching to another distro... it's nice and easy to install it (even the manual installation version is a piece of cake), and then Automatix will handle installing things like your graphics card driver, Macromedia flash, Java, codecs, etc...

The installation instructions are here. The manual version using apt-get is only 6 steps so takes only a minute to do.

I've not used any 64-bit distro as I'm still running a 32-bit CPU... maybe others can comment on whether this is likely to be problematic or not.

ps - don't worry if the individual steps of the installation don't make much sense... the first step is just updating which repository you want to use for Apt (as Automatix uses its own repository rather than the bog-standard Ubuntu ones). Then the rest of the steps are downloading a key to authenticate that the software you're downloading is what you expect it to be, and then updating Apt to pick up the new repository and lastly performing the actual installation of Automatix, via the command apt-get install.

Finally got it working! Though i had to change to the 32bit version of Kubuntu.

I noticed that the nvidia-glx enable command was changing my xorg.conf but i suspect in the wrong way.

The driver section was changed to "nvidia" from "nv" as it should have done but the PCI section was changed to "0:5:0" instead of "5:0:0" which was wrong.

I may reinstall the 64 edition again to see what the differences are.
