I have never really given too much thought into KVM switches.
I had one many years ago, ha ha, but of fun etc, but thats all. I gave it away as I had my bit of fun, but that was it.
In the last few years, I have not been the sort of person who does things like dual booting, I like to have things to themselves, and this is how I have everything.
More recently however, I have found that they can be very useful when used properly and for the right reasons.
The snag is, that I have found myself spending money on them when I find out that they are not all that good.
I will give you a great example or two...
My monitor does 1920x1080 and I am using the DVI ports, and so I get a KVM that does DVI + Keyboard + Mouse, but then I find that it does not like my keyboard or mouse. The keyboard in its basic form, works ok, but the extra keys and the volume etc, dont work, and the mouse does not work at all.
Keyboard is a G510S and the Mouse is a G5.
Now, ok, I can accept the extra functions on the keyboard are not vital to me, and I have other mice and so I got around it for a bit, but after a while, I found that it would sometimes lose itself and not see either mouse of keyboard and the only solution was to restart the PC.
Now, after some days, this got to me, and I then bought a cheaper as chips one, and the downside to this, was that it is VGA only, but this IS fully compatible with my Keyboards and Mouse. I am currently using this one still.
Issues are not missing however... being VGA, it sometimes resorts to a lower rez, and I have to often force the resolution back up, and this ends up with my nicely organised icons being thrown all into the left again, requiring reorganisation, and again, this too sometimes loses my mouse... not as often as the other one, but sometimes it does.
The other one also had a remote too... It would have a button at the end of a wire that would select the system, and this meant that the KVM was well out of the way, but this cheaper one does not have that and so I have to have it on the PC with all the wires showing etc.
I have also borrowed a couple of other people to give them a shot, but again, I have not found a KVM that works 100% as I want them to.
I need a KVM that does DVI, has full compatibility with keyboard and mice, and have a remote selector, that will not suddenly forget that the mouse or keyboard are connected.
Oh, and this one I am using now, works like I have unplugged the K/M each time and thats a pain too!
Does anyone recommend a really good KVM switch that does not cost the earth?
