If you are using the older type of KVM's then I can imagine. However most of the recent (say upto 5 years or so ago) have a dongle which converts to standard CAT5 going to the upstream KVM.
old style. we had big thick KVM cables going to the switch, and when the rack had more than about 10-12 boxes in it, it became completely unmanagable mess of cabling. That and the rack mounted monitors kept dieing which were expensive to keep replacing.
At the moment we just have a couple of trolleys with a normal keyboard, monitor and mouse on them. We just push them around the server rooms when we want actual console access; otherwise its RDP 99% of the time.
