Not entirely sure if this is the right place for it but hopefully someone can help.

First of all the game freezes and the screen goes black then it takes me into desktop. There is a error bubble from task bar saying something to the effect of "display driver atikmdag stopped working but has successfully recovered" then wham I'm back In game and some distance from other players, like I've just had a massive lag spike. It's all over in a few seconds.

Currently using a Radeon X1650SE and on Vista Home Premium 32Bit.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jonny/Majik

I get the same thing sometimes with my nvidia card but nvkddlm (or something along those lines) has stopped responding but has recovered,

Sometimes though it just sticks in a loop (black screen with stuttering sound then 1 second of gameplay then back to black screen) and i can only fix it by restarting the pc,

I've had this problem recently when I've bought a new PC. I was ready to RMA it until I found out that this issue is not exclusively to do with either ATI or Nivdia, nor is it to do with Vista as such.

Microsoft introduced in Vista the GPU recovery feature to which it tries to recover a TDR and usually all that would happen is your screen would flicker. Worst case, if the TDR occurs more than 8 times it would hang or sometimes reboot your machine. After a lot of searching I've found it is casued by the power savings features and/or GPU fan speed controlling in both CCC and Nvidia Control panel.

I've since uninstalled the CCC and run ATITOOLS and this issue has gone away. An event log entry is usually generated and the issue can be found here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756372.aspx Further details on Vista's TDR mechanism can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/wddm_timeout.mspx

Hopefully this will point you in the right direction of what to do next.
