Just been having a play with this, and apart from a few no clip issues it works quite well, obviously 1st person is where it's at but I find it's still cool to be able to switch to 3rd person at any point with a press of a button. :)

To get it working all you have to do is add the following bind to your Left 4 Dead CFG, which is located in :\STEAM\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg

bind "whatever key you want" "thirdpersonshoulder; cam_idealyaw -3"

Here's a pic of what my CFG looks like with the command inserted (as you can see, I binded mine to mouse button 5).

Note, you'll have to set the file as read only otherwise the bind will be overwritten when starting the game (right click CFG > properties > read only > apply).

Quick vid to give you an idea how it looks:

Very nice. I can see this being very useful because you can see zombies all around you, while still retaining first person controls.

Gonna try this.

Interesting that it's a proper over-the-shoulder view and the camera isn't blocked by the back of the player's head. They must have been considering this as default view at some point.

Yeah, I imagine it could well be included in a future update, maybe they just need to iron out the no clip issues first.

It clips through (you can see through) the wall on your right-hand side

And the cross-hair is off set a few degrees, which makes the sniper-rifle almost unusable.

It'll need modding before it's viable to actually play that way, though I prefer FPS anyway;)

^^ Agreed, as I stated in my OP, even if 3rd person was implemented perfectly, 1st person is still definately where it is at.

Still, I guess there's no harm in being able to switch between the two with a press of a button. :)

Are you completly Mental :p:p:p

Be gone you insane person & leave my FPS alone :D

you just made this game very interesting

its a great way to play the game

its binded to my back thumb button on my mouse and works great as a way of observing the level/layout/opposition

i really like it

Glad a few of you have at least tried it. As CrowK said, it still needs a lot of work for it to be perfect though, still, there's no harm in having a key assigned to it. :)
Hehe, well said :D
^^ He was only playing mate, as was I, I'm not sure why you felt the need to troll your quippy remark though? You do realise the command is not compulsory, merely just a heads up for those who wish to try it?

It would help me know when Malc is standing behind me, shooting me in the back of my head.

:D I have one thing to say, CROUCH DOWN WHEN IN FRONT DUDDDDDEEE :p:p:p

O.P.
Yes mate I was playing & you would have to be stupid or stevie wonder not to see it :D
I'm all for anything that brings more enjoyment & people to this game as I've not had as much fun online for years :D

This feature has actually always been available in all the source engine games. You can do it in HL2 and the episodes. Trouble is, though, it was never intended for use (so not sure why it's in there) and the Freeman model is broken (and at points, just a big grey rectangle). They clearly didn't waste time rendering it for 3rd person.
