So the missus and I were casting a woeful eye over our tired and sagging DFS fabric sofa, just under three years old and racking our brains where to get a replacement. There's not many places left on the High Street and ordering online is a gamble as we found last year when we bought a replacement armchair.

Thoughts have now turned to something from La-Z-Boy, either a couple of individual recliners or one of their two/three seater sofas. Browsing on line there is a huge variety of styles and prices to choose from, with a three seater sofa probably clocking in @£1200 - £1500 for a manual recliner. However in real terms that's quite good when you look at what DFS are selling some of their tat for. If it's comfortable while offering plenty of support and likely to last 10+ years, then it's a good option.

However before going further I'd be interested to hear views of people who have purchased La-Z-Boy stuff, in particular with regard to quality of the build and how they have worn over the years.

Not worth it.

I have a two and three seater, and they are not that comfortable. Maybe it their new ones, my parents have had some for over 10 years, and they feel much nicer.

I do not think its worth the premium, as you said 1 sofa is over £1200. You can get a set of recliners for that price!

I do feel a little ripped off.

We had a set of these at old house - (Big room) and are impressed with the leather - thick leather not this faux stuff - if you live within striking distance from their factory it could be worth going and having a look. - I had the recliner (Senator) which is quite big -

Got old mans chair now that tips you up and out - I do now like electric recliners. - Quality is rubbish though

We've had a 3 + 2 leather sofa with foot stall for about 5 years now and very impressed with them! Extremely comfortable, durable, still look like they are new. We treat the leather once or twice a year, but apart from that have been maintenance free. Plus they have an amazing warranty on them if anything does ever go wrong.

I only have the standard recliner (had it for about 2 years) and have to say it's been fantastic. It's very comfortable and still looks like new.

Not sure on the problems other people have had but mine seems fine.

We looked specifically at lay z boy sofas, without giving other a try.

In hindsight we should have looked at sofas we really likened instead of finding a model we liked in the lay z boy range.

We are not so sure now that the model we purchased was best suited for us.

I have an electrical one, a hand-me-down from my sister and it's 4-5 years old and it is really comfy, well made, looks great and no problems at all.

Stressless are supposed to be very good. I have sat on a few in showrooms and they are comfy. Lazy Boy's seem quite comfy but I can't get past their horrid designs, would be suited in an American house but they are not very contemporary.

Thanks for the info, think we will still be investing in La-Z-Boy as it's got to be better than DFS. Next decision(s) to make are whether to go for a sofa or two separate chairs and cloth or leather. I prefer cloth as leather always seems cold to me, but SWMBO likes the idea of leather (oo-err).

got a Lazyboy corner couch on order from SCS - so I'm hoping it's as good quality as the one in the show room!

Don't get a fabric one, epically not cream colour it transfers blue die from jeans like no other sofa I have ever seen. after 7 months one of the seats was blue, (the wifes seat who mostly wears leggings) luckily we purchased the fabric guard cover and they have agreed to replace the material on all three seats. (although we have been waiting over 12 months so far for this to happen)

Our last sofa (non La-Z-Boy) was the same colour and it never suffered with this, and people regularly slept on it.

My friend bought the single-seat recliner in light brown leather about ten years ago. It's been regularly used, but not abused at all, and the leather is now wearing away.

Well we took the plunge and ordered a Memphis 2 seat sofa in a fairly dark brown fabric. The lead in time is around 10 - 12 weeks, as I believe they are made to order.

If it lasts 10 years then I'll be more than happy, over three times longer than the junk from DFS.

Will update with a comfort report once it arrives!

It's arrived and we're quite impressed. In terms of sitting upright I would have to say it's firm and supportive rather than sumptuous, though that may be the change from our previous squished out DFS abomination. Still comfortable, though. The seat height is also much higher off the ground than even a normal non-DFS sofa, which takes a bit of getting used to in non reclined mode. It kind of reminds me of one of the old Mark One carriage compartment style train seats in that respect.

In recline mode also very good, though getting the right posture takes a bit of practice as although the back reclines slightly, it does feel a bit odd to have your legs out almost horizontal but still sitting up to watch the TV.

Any downers, nothing too bad. The leg rest does have a tendency to sink downwards gradually so you need to lift your legs to spring it back up. When in recline mode, the operating mechanism is fully exposed and consists of some fairly vicious looking metal scissor and spring mechanisms. Therefore absolutely essential to check where the cat is before dropping the seat back into the upright position.

How are you finding it nearly two years on?
