Hi guys,
*not asking for medical advice*
Back in January into my fourth month of training, in my second term of uni, I injured my shoulder during dumbell press. I had done several sets of DB shoulder press and DB leant over rows/pull ins with less rest time than usual. Partly because I wanted to push myself, but was also going out that night!
During the last set of DB press with 30KG dumbells (I was turning hands inwards so palms faced at the top of the rep as I had been told this helps extra definition) when I felt something im my shoulder just 'go', my shoulder jarred back in its socket like it had dislocated out the back of it and the weight then swung outwards which allowed me to hear a tear and a grind/crack over my headphones! Needless to say I dropped the weight as soon as it was clear of landing on my chest or face! My shoulder returned to its socket which lead me to believe it was a subluxation (partial dislocation). However pulling my arm across my body allowed this to happen again.
Eventually I decided going to A&E to have it checked out would be best. As my traps and neck muscle had been holding my shoulder in place these had swelled pritty badly. The doctor I saw (medal if you can guess where he comes from) said I had merely sprained my shoulderand neck and to rest up and dose up on pain killers. Rasing my arm above my head was a mission for the next few weeks.
I returned to the gym only for cardio and some light shoulder strengthening exercises. After a while I had no more trouble from my shoulder, apart from on a few occasions when it didnt quite feel secure during a lift or press. I still maganed to add an extra 12.5 kilo to my bench (107.5) and 12.5kg to either arm on DB press that year (42.5). So it has healed up reasonably well but is not quite right.
I went to see my GP about it who described it as a likely torn shoulder capsule and reffered me to a specialist who I saw last week. He obviousley knew his stuff and said it is probaly a labral tear which is causing shoulder instability which allows my shoulder to miss behave every so often (it is still quite painful and catches me off guard when it does.) I had two x-rays and am coming back down from Uni for an MRI scan in a few weeks and then i'll hear the verdict on the extent of the damage and any treatment.
I've been doing rotator cuff exercises such as sitting on the floor with my left leg bent up and my left elbow resting on my knee (as it is my left shoulder that is damaged). With my forearm parallel to my chest (at a right angle), raising and lowering a light dumbell. I can feel my shoulder is not 'tight' and not stable when doing this.
Has anybody suffered from a similar injury? Or is able to recommend me some other exericses to try? as i'd like to have an injury free year and as little hastle as possible from my shoulder!
Thanks
Benny C
Sorry for the long post!
