Was just browsing a well known game site for a new game o buy and couldn't find anything. I just looked at the top 25 selling games atm in the uk, and 14 of them are published by EA, 7 of those in the top 10 and 8 sims/sims 2 titles as well. Is it just me or has 2006 been a really poor year for pc gaming? Perhaps it is also just me but the last couple of years seems to have witnessed a kind of innovation freeze.

People have been saying the exact same thing for years. I don't think it has been any worse recently. Looking at the charts isn't a good indication of how much originality there is because the original games might not be the best selling.

Well I dont know if you a mmorpg fan kdd, but I think this is pretty damn original C5

Tell me that does'nt make you wanna go play some L2

As for your basic FPS type chart games, I guess the premise is if it aint broke dont fix it. Thats why we have Quake 1-99 Unreal 1-99, they know they will sell like hot cakes because of the name.
I guess its also a lot cheaper to keep churning out sequals to creating a completly new game, the video game industry is getting more like the movie industry every year, soon we will have, Doom the movie, maybe even a Tomb Raider film

I think 2006 so far has been a bit slow for gaming. Although saying that over the next 12 months there are some games of real interest to me coming out.

Football Manager 2007
Medieval 2
Supreme Commander
Stalker
Spore
C&C 3
Age Of Conan
Pirates Of The Burning Sea

I could go on, so don't give up on PC Gaming just yet. Im sure you will find something original and fun in the coming months. :)

Armed Assault. Apart from its predecessor Operation Flashpoint I don't think anyons had/has tried to make a game like it.

And Armed Assault looks cool.

At least 4 of those are sequels.......

ill burn in hell for this but..............

if the games are fun and enjoyable, who cares if they are a sequel or even original.

Right now im looking forward to Medieval 2, Faces of War, HL2:ep 1/2, TF2, ET: Quake wars and Company of heroes on the PC.

Bang on. Here's some of my favourite games ever:

Quake/Unreal/CoD/Far Cry/HL2/D3 etc - Run around shooting things, how original.
Need for Speed: Porsche 2000 - Drive around overtaking things, how original.
Deus Ex - FPS with RPG elements... System Shock 2 clone anyone?
GTA: Vice City - A sequel.
Civilisation 2/3 - sequels.

You don't see people critisising the latest cars for coming with 4 wheels, a steering wheel and pedals etc; there's nothing wrong with building on solid foundations.

Worst thing is you wait about 1-4 years for a game to come out (I wonder if Stalker will ever be released) and then you finish it in about 6 hours !

i think its interesting that the most original ideas in the last year or so have been the small teams releasing their games for free download.. such as The hidden and warsow.
