When I am using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), Sonar, Sony ACID, Cubase e.t.c it's laggy, the sound is choppy at times and there is a delay in playing an instrument whilst recording then hearing it from the speakers, what do I need to sort this out, new soundcard, new processor?

Currently using the onboard sound from my Dell motherboard. ()

Specz:

Pentium 4 3.0Ghz
2GB DDR2 RAM
Onboard sound

And if I do need a new soundcard, anyone got any recommendations?

Yeah, you need a proper digital audio interface for recording and monitoring. Look into the M-Audio range of products. For a half decent setup, your looking at at least £200 for the interface and some half decent studio monitors unless you already have them. :)

Thanks, I was recommended to get a MIDI controller from the same company, but looks like they have everything I need to get started on their site :)

I use the EMU 1212M - highly recommend it, 24bit and 192kHz - yet still really good vale for money. Plug in some decent active studio monitors and you will be good to go...

Know this is an old thread but thought I'd chip in anyway... I've got an M-Audio Delta 44 in my DAW and it works perfectly. No latency problems, very easy to install and it has four ins and four outs. And most importantly: very good sound quality!

I'd defo recommend M-Audio cards.
