im using skype and recently i have been getting really bad lag when talking to my girlfriend, it takes like 4 seconds to get what she says back to me. this im almost 100% sure its her net, as it happens more when other people are also on the net on her house, e.g. it take 6/7 seconds but mine no matter how many people it also seems ok.

is this because of skype that it lags so bad as it becomes unusuable? hoping there is some other software i can use that wont do this?

Fist thing i'd try is get a 3rd party mate to help test you and your GF connect seperatly to 3rd part and see if the problem is at her end or your end.

see house mates are using Bit Torrant, it consumes a lot of band width and can create lag.

Check her system for what is running or what should not be running.

If using a outer heck ports are being forwarded.

Firstly, Skype is not VOIP, it is more like MSN chat, and is peer2peer based.

This means that almost certainly when her housemates are using the connection then you will get lag in the transfer.

Get her own connection or a better connection and a new router that allows you to do your own packet shaping, the give priority to the voice calls.
