help
i have an 8 meg bt connection although it runs between 6.1 - 6.9 meg,
i have two pcs, one running xp sp2 the other vista home premium.
these are connected to a netgear dg834 v.3 router.
browsing the net is fine on both but when both gaming i.e bf2 the second pc running vista laggs like a b***h, im pulling my hair out now as i brought this router thinking that it would fix this problem as i was wireless before,
a friend of mine has a 1 meg connection and he has no trouble with 2 pcs running bf2,
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Veee

My first thought would be thats down to the quality of the router. Games usually throw hundreds or packets but it only amounts to 10k/s or so.

Try lowering the speed both pcs connect to the router at

Start > settings > network > Right click on Lan > properties > configure > speed/duplex settings > force 10 full duplex > Ok

That doesnt alter the router but its negoiated from both ends and your pc will refuse anything but half duplex which is fast enough for an internet connection.
Half duplex 10 would be a bit slower then 8megabits

Do it on both pcs and see if it helps any. Ive only just checked your router type and it says wireless so I presume its the same but maybe it isnt  Never had one of those, I hear too much trouble about them to bother

Does it accept a wired connection, maybe test it that way. Any variation of your setup will help show the actual problem up eventually

it is a wired router which has 4 lan connections,
i will try what you suggested and post back results :)

Can i ask what isp your with?
Do you only get the lag when both pcs are gaming?

Have you tried pinging from both pcs to identify where the lag is?

tracert is better still

isp is bt
and lagg only when two pc's are gaming

done the tracer thing and the first one times out, would that be where the problem is

just says request timed out, i get between 18 & 24 ms on the other 13
i have changed speed to 10 mbits as per above post should i change back to 100 and give that a try

No its made no difference anyway unless you transfer files between these machines often. Just keep changing things I recommend.

Having various parts availabe to swap between is usefull like a spare network card or router even

i have raised the speed to 100 force full duplex, i have swopped ports in router and it has lowered the ping times but the first still times out,

Keep going, reinstall the os maybe. If you install to a new directory you can run win xp in tandem so you could try a clean install just for testing purposes

Does that router have a HUB or a SWITCH built into the back of it?

If its a HUB then one of the pc's is simply putting more traffic through the router than it can handle.

Dump it and get a better model.

it is a 4 way wired adsl modem router dg834v3 by netgear,

i have just noticed on the pc running vista that the network option for tcp/ip v6 has limited connectivity and has no protocol installed, i.e asks for a disk with the protocol on.
would this be the problem and if so where can i get the protocol from

heres hoping

thanks guys for your advice, still not working though,

found another post where the guy is having simillar probs with his laptop
their tech support number was posted so i am going to give them a buzz and see if we can sort it, thanks again :D

phoned tech support today
after spending ten minutes changing settings and the guy told me i could only use one computer for gaming not both, i explained for the third time that i wanted both computers running bf2 to wich he talked me through undoing all the changes wich i had done in the first place, (20 minutes of wasted time)
ive tested them both gaming now and it works fine, so nothing has changed but now no lagg. thanks for the help guys
