Very annoying problem. All my games over the internet lag. Happens all the time on ET - ping spikes up to 1000 (normally around 30-40) when it happens. Just been playing CSS, same thing but dont notice the ping spike (unless im just missing it). Im with Virgin (2Mb - 8Mb no where to be seen yet  ), anyone else with Virgin have same problems? Are there any tweaks i can do to improve it?

Web browsing/downloading is all hunky doory and im running through a router.

PS - Thanks in advance tolien ;) :p

-Try playing on different servers (different hosts) and see if the problem persists
-Disconnect any other clients on your network to ensure their traffic isn't interfering
-Ensure that no other applications on your PC are using bandwidth (particularly upload)..
-Reconnect your adsl line

Yeh thats what I would do. Good post

The only game i can think off where someone had a lag was in Soldier Of Fortune, when you came down the steps at the underground station, if you were quick enough you could blow his balls off. :D

Id go along with HangTime. :p

That's because "toilen" doesn't exist ;)

There's no point repeating what HangTime has already said, though firing up something like mtr and pointing it at something like Jolt, or signing up for l8nc and watching what happens might also be worthwhile.

Registered with them tonight.

Went on a sever which has real time stats and every time it did it (about every 1.5-2mins) the loss and choke gauges would go up and then back down a few secs later.

And it acts as if i have just picked up all my weapons straight after...

i'm on pipex and no troubles, then again it could be them just having problems in a different area. I used to have this trouble a lot when I was with NTL. Ran MTR a few times to the servers i played on and noticed I was getting an average of 20-30% loss on each hop.

Mate you using wirless or ethernet? only asking as if i use wireless i get the excact symptoms you describe. Only way i fixed it was drilling holes through my house and using Ethernet.

Tried everything as mentioned above - refromated - flashed to diff firmware - newer - older - chipset drivers etc..

Do you have more than one net adpt? could be confliction? Firewall? are you on Nvidia? Nvidia have a packet inspection hardware firewall dont they? (chipset) perhaps thats on - im sure (ish) that would cos some probs....

Yeah im thinking its my router (wireless). Playing CS last night against Gord and my ping spiked but stayed high, checked wireless connection and it dropped to 5Mbps from 54. Moved router next to my computer now (was floor below) - if it presists, will plug in Rj45.
