Lagspikes in Games (Wireless)

I recently got a wireless USB adapter (Netgear WG111) and I've noticed that when playing games online occasionally i'll get lagspikes. They don't affect my ping, it's just that the game will freeze for ~1 second or maybe a little more. It's not always the same distance apart and I've had this problem every time I've used wireless.

I'm running XP 32-bit and my PC can handle TF2 more than well enough. When I use a cabled connection there are no lagspikes at all, it's just that now I've moved into a uni house with friends I don't want a 30m cable going all the way through the house.

I bought the wireless USB stick about a week ago from OCUK (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-026-NG&groupid=46&catid=1451&subcat=1469)

Any fixes for this problem?

Used to happen to me then I just got sick of it and cabled. It's down the to the WIndows Wireless service which will periodically to try and negotiate a faster connectin back to your Wireless Access Point (or at least that's the best explanation I got searching lots of forums).

A suggested fix was to cable in (which is what I did do) and also to purchase a wireless NIC which has decent management software for configuring it's connection/settings which bypasses (does not use) the windows wireless service for this purose. Good luck.

Although windows wireless service can be to blame, thats not always the case. I had a similar problem when I changed my router.

I would avoid using third party tools for wirless management as they are dire. There is a fix for the windows service but it didn't help me. (Sorry, but I don't have a link as I'm at work).

never install wireless software, just the latest bare driver

the best I've seen for gaming (for usb anyway) is a safecom £10 thing, it has 64bit drivers too, solid pings

but you still can't beat gigabit network... just lay down some cables and enjoy the speed/stability

Is the safecom wireless usb stick on ocuk?

Also, cabling isn't really an option. I'm living in a house where the only working phone line is in one of the bedrooms and if we run a cable through it you can't close the bedroom door. I will have a look for the wireless 'fix' for windows and hope that works :/

It was the windows WZC. I disabled it and now everything works fine. The netgear drivers seem to be one hell of a lot better than the belkin ones.

Not being funny - but can't you just drill a hole through a wall / doorframe?
