Laminate Flooring

I got some nasty black tar stuff on my creamy coloured carpet and it just looks a mess and is annoying me.

My room is around 4m x 5m.

I was considering getting laminate flooring.

What would I expect to pay for an average quality from a DIY shop, also the cost of underlay?

Is it quite easy to get it to lay flat? Our house is 1930's so the floorboards are large and iirc not all "perfectly" level.

What is noise like in the room below?

Will any heat issues arise in my room?

If you have decent floorboards I'd be much more tempted to rip up the carpet and sand and varnish the existing floorboards, much nicer than laminate stuff.

Does anyone the site posted a while back that sold floorboards? I remember it wooden floorboards for near the price of laminate and was praised by a few forum members.
