I have laminate floor in my kitchen and entrance hall, there are various surface scratches here and there but nothing deep.

Is there any way to improve the appearance of these? I've heard various theories ranging from pencil erasers to oil to swell the 'wood' ?

Anyone had any positive experiences with the various methods?

Liberon do some fluids to both provide a bit of sealing and also improve the appearance of laminate floors, might be worth a look. At the end of the day laminate isn't hugely hard wearing, so in heavy traffic areas it's going to end up showing sooner or later.

On a related matter, we have real-wood topped laminate flooring that is showing some signs of wear. Can this be sanded and re-sealed like normal solid-wood flooring?

Sounds like an engineered wood, so yes you can sand a small amount of and re-seal. It is better to wait until it's worth getting the whole floor done professionally though, rather than do patches.
