Hi all,

Well basically you may or may not remeber I had my cd changer stolen from the my car on my drive a few months ago.

Today I wake up to find two very very suspicous looking people in a van, drive right up to my car, have a very good look, and then turn around and drive off, I suppose thats not all that odd, but if you knew the layout of my road and saw these two blokes, you would understand.

Anyway, it got me thinking that while you can secure your car as much as you want, there is no way to stop them putting the window though and getting your radio.

So then I was thinking about laminated glass. I dont know much about it but my understanding is that it has a layer of plastic inside the glass and although it will break when you hit it, it will stay rigid and in position.

Which on face value is good, but then theres two other problems that come to mind.

Firstly in a major accident, a roll over or such, you might not be able to get out of the car, might need the fire brigade etc.

And secondly chances are when a theif cant put the window through will just bend the door or something.

So I suppose its a compromise really, maybe you gain some security but then is it worth comprimising yor saftey for?

Has anyone got security glass or have experience with it?

I believe you can push it out from the inside, but not the other way around.

On Used Car Roadshow last week, they demonstrated trying to smash it... and he did try damn hard, but it wouldn't cave in, it's a great invention really.

Still need a replacement window if they do try, though, but it'll give them a shock :D

And then they'll attack you door leaving you with a broken window AND a knackered door - great! :p

I'm dead against this sort of stuff, not worth it imo. Just get a nice alarm & immobilisor. :)
 
Ahh right I didnt realise that it could be kicked out from the inside, that takes away what I was considering to be the biggest disadvantage then.

Yer exactly, you will have to pay for another window, but at least they dont get your stuff, and it would be worth it just to **** them off then they couldnt get through it. I suppose they would have to make a load of noise in the process aswell, which depending on the circumstances might make them disapear sharpish.

I have an alarm and an imobilisor, I also have a very big very heavy crook lock, They would have a pretty hard job taking the car without the keys.

Its not that im worried about though, its the radio thats being targeted, the standard ford CD changer in one of our cars was stolen, and the same unit stolen from a mondeo 4 houses down, we never replaced the stolen one, but I have one in the other mondeo, and I think its this that they were looking at this morning.
 
Beat them to it and buy an aftermarket radio? :p

Seriously if these people are scouting out your specific radio then I'm pretty sure that some window film won't stop them.

You've paid for a new window, you'll pay for the film, you'll pay for the window again when they go for it and then have to fork out for when they bend/attack your door lock.

Makes you sick really :/
 
I know, theres a lot of sense in what your saying.

The problem is though there is a part of me what just wont back down, I dont see why I should be prevented from having good things, just because some little ******** wants my stuff for himself.

You definately can't kick them from the inside out.
The best way to get through them is with a saw.
 
If it's a 6006e headunit, they seem a very popular target for thieves because they can fit in to most Fords with a 1.5 DIN hole (i.e. pretty much all of them).

All well and good if you are awake and unhurt but a pain in the backside for anyone trying to get you out. Hence why a lot of insurers won't insure you or quote you silly premiums if you have this.

the longer it takes to get you and your passengers the more medical care etc you may need down the line as you didnt get treated soon enough id assume, so a lot more expense for them
