Im doing some research into lan cafes/gaming cafes. I was wondering what sort of server spec would you expect to find in a cafe that runs 20 computers with all the major games such as, wow, css, 1.6, bf series, etc

Im guessing each game would have to run a dedicated server, so people can play across lan? do you think more than one server would be used?

thanks

ps sorry if i posted in the wrong section

css:
Processor/CPU power: To run a Source dedicated server you need at least a 1.0Ghz Intel CPU or equivalent. This will run a basic server with 20 slots at a good level of performance.

Memory: To run a normal server you will need at least 512MB RAM, you might need to restart the server every once in a while to clean up the memory. 1GB is enough to run over 60 player slots total.

Bandwidth: Bandwidth is used a lot—more specifically, upload bandwidth. Here is a list of how fast your connection must be to run a certain number of players at lowest settings. (When talking about bandwidth for servers we always talk about upload, not download.) Note: these numbers are theoretical, your results may vary slightly!

prob not as high as you'd think. With only 20 comps they're only going to have 1 or 2 of the dedicated servers being used at a time and they really dont need that much power.

^^ some sort of cheap quad core Q6600, ram really cheap so why not, 4gb. Big hdd, 2 x 74gb raptors in raid maybe plus 320gb one to put patchs etc on. Mobo with on board graphics, case, and a UPS and your sorted. Easily be able to run a couple of dedicated servers with 20 or so players

this was a spec i came up with,

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz 1333FSB Socket 775 12MB L2 Cache (2x6MB) Retail Boxed Processor

ASUS P5KC AiLifestyle Series iP35 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard

Corsair 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL5(5-5-5-18) Heat Spreader Lifetime Warranty

Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3

Samsung HD753LJ 750GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm *32MB Cache*

Coolermaster Cosmos RC-1000 Full Tower Case

Arctic Power 700W PSU

Do you think thats over the top? bearing in mind that the wouldnt want it change it in a years time

If all you are doing is serving games, then the 750Gb hard drive is way over the top. My clan hires a Dedi box from here And our specs are a Xeon dual core, 4gb ram and an 80gb hard drive. Currently have 2 CS:S and a CoD4 server (24 slots each) and the server is no where near loaded. You could probably run ~10 servers from the specs above (Depending on game). Even the PSU is overkill. Better to go for a 500W maximum. It will have better efficiency and save a little power.

That kind of spec could probably run several 20 slot servers simultaneously! :)
