I have two machines connected to a Linksys WRT54GSV4 router, which in turn is connected to an NTL cable modem. I can connect to the Internet on both machines but I'm not able to ping each machine from the other. I want to setup file sharing on these machines. But how do I set up a LAN? Are there some router settings I'm missing?

Sounds more like a firewall on the PCs than the router tbh. Is the Windows firewall enabled on each? If so then try disabling it as it's not much use in your environment since the router will be blocking incoming traffic and the Windows firewall doesn't block outgoing traffic anyway.

Also, make sure that File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks in enabled in the properties of the network connection for both machines.

Make sure file and print sharings on both pcs , also make both pcs use the same workgroup ie some like MSHOME

u can set ip's to each pc as well but u will need to know the routers login ip. for use when setting ips for each pc under Internet protocals tcp/ip

ie

use the following IP address:

IP address: 192.168.0.x ( change the x from 3 to 255 as that will be the pc number)

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 ( router login ip )

Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1 ( router login ip )

should look somethink like this:

you dont have to set is up like this but it help stopping pcs from over taking ips, and i find that the network runs better when using fixed ips

good luck :)
